Germany calls for a new EU raison d’être
The German Chancellor has stated that the European Union must be something more than a mere economic or political union; it must find a new relevance for its citizens. In line with the Pope’s demands for recognition of the Union’s Christian roots, Angela Merkel has advocated the search for ‘something more’ to ‘make things better’. Her solution? Simple. The European Constitution. The democratic votes of the Dutch and the French have, apparently, been a ‘set-back’, but the EU ‘absolutely needs the constitution to ensure the European Union is effective and capable of action.’
She reiterated: ‘We need to think about how we make the constitution a success. I want the constitution, the German government wants the constitution and I think a majority of this parliament wants it too.’ So sod the French, sod the Dutch, and sod the voice of the people. If Germany wants it, that’s settled then. Plus ça change…

Fourth Reich?! It is unbelievably arrogant to keep on asserting that 'the people are wrong'. What's the point of a referendum if there's a pre-decided right and a wrong answer? Why don't they just admit the EU is a dictatorship, and democracy is nothing to do with it, and Germany leads it?
As I have been saying for a lawwnnnng time, the EU is a government not of laws, but of men.
Cranmer, to think that Merkel is the daughter of a fearless Protestant pastor. She's obviously been led astray by the foul machinations of Papist intrigue. She remains a prize specimen of Teutonic totty, nonetheless. Tempted, old boy?
GC, not really, a tad old for my tastes, methinks.
She has doubtless been led astray by the Papists, or else she is hopelessly compromised because Stoiber is breathing down her neck, waiting to take over... a Bavarian Chancellor coinciding with a Bavarian Pope... a marriage made in heaven?
Stoiber, to his credit, is about as Euroskeptic and pro-free market as politicians go in Germany. And as such in consensus-imprisoned Germany he is pretty much unelectable. He's also a dedicated foot soldier of Vatican imperialism so that's a bit of a minus. As for Merkel not being your type -I'd always had you down as more of a Cameron Diaz man in any case.
I like your "creative savvy"!
We are very much the same.
I will add you to my favourites and check back soon!

I'm dead, Brandin Brander, so my 'creative savvy' is divinely inspired. If that's your pic, you seems fat and lazy, and I am neither.
You are welcome to return anytime, but I only post when there's something of religio-political substance to talk about. Can't abide blogs that talk about football scores...
Why don't people calm down. Merkel is a much more astute person than people posting here. Germany cannot be seen to wreck the EU; only France can do that.
Merkel is piling on the pressure on Chirac just before the French elections in 2007. Poland is vehemently opposed to the Constitution, in contrast Britain is mildly opposed.
Germany pays the bills and wants some kind of structure to deal with the upcoming train crash of Bulgaria and Rumania and the fact that Merkel's Party opposes Turkish entry and the SPD is for, but SPD voters are totally opposed.
They are stuck as politicians having voted the Constitution through and yet most Germans see the Eu as responsible for their jobs being exported eastwards with new factories subsidised by German funding of the EU.
I do wish people in Britain were more sophisticated in their analysis. "Fourth Reich" - how trite can you get ? This kind of comment makes Britons sound childish........the Germans have no interest in any "Reich" - the last one cost them 5 million dead.
They just cannot be seen to be the ones to fold the tent on the EU.
Merkel is a much more astute person than people posting here
Well that must include you. You don't know her, you've never met her, so my opinion, based on my perceptions, is every bit as valid as your opinion, based subjectively on your perceptions.
Fourth Reich is how it seems to me. Isn't that why the Reichsmark became the Deutchmark became the Euromark?
How do you know I don't know Merkel ? you make a wild assumption Olly.
OK, if you know her, why don't you post something authoritative, instead of your own conjectures and pretend they are worth more than another person's conjecture?
