Geert Wilders addresses the court in his political show trial

If one cannot say that the Islam is a backward religion, or that Mohammad was a criminal, or defame the Qur'an even by placing it on the bottom shelf of a public library, then one is living in an Islamic country.

Especially when one is free to say that Christianity is composed of nothing but fantasies and fairytales, to desecrate the Bible with filth and pornography, or say that Jesus was gay, fantasised about sex with prostitutes, or (if he existed at all) was a fraud and a liar.

Here is a transcript of Geert Wilders' opening speech as he is prosecuted for 'incitement to hatred', 'discrimination', and 'insulting Muslims'. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 15 months in prison.

Since participating in public debate has become a dangerous activity, it may not be too long before we see similiar trials in the UK (O, hang on...).

There is a very real sense in which Geert Wilders speaks for the liberties of us all:

Mr. President, members of the court, I would like to only use a few minutes of my right to speak.

And I would like to begin by saying that of all our attainments, freedom is the most precious and most vulnerable. It is what people have dedicated their lives to and what people have given their lives for. Our freedom in this country is the fruit of centuries. It is the result of a history that has no equal and has brought us to where we are today.

I believe with all my heart and soul that the freedom is threatened in the Netherlands. That heritage, which generations could only dream of, is precisely this freedom which is no longer a given fact, no longer a matter self-evidence.

I dedicate my life to defending our freedom. I know what the risks are and I every day again, pay the price for that. I do not complain about it; it is my own decision. I see it as my duty and therefore I am standing here today.

I know that the words I use are sometimes tough, but they are never reckless. It is not my intention to spare the ideology of conquest and destruction, but neither do I intend to offend people.

I have nothing against Muslims. I have a problem with the Islam and the Islamization of our country because Islam is at right angles to freedom.

Future generations will wonder how we, in 2010, at this location, in this room, served our most precious asset. Whether the freedom is for both sides in this debate and thus also for Islam-critics. Or whether in the Netherlands only one side of the debate may be heard. Whether freedom of speech in the Netherlands applies to everyone, or only to some.

The answer to that is immediately also the answer to the question whether freedom still has a home in this country.

Freedom has but never been owned by a small group, but has always been the heritage of us all. We have all been blessed by it.

Lady Justice wears a blindfold, but she can hear perfectly well, she can listen perfectly well. And I hope she, Lady Justice, will hear the following phrases sound, loud and clear:

"It is not only the right, but also the duty of free people to speak out against any ideology that threatens freedom."

Thomas Jefferson, the third president of the United States, was right:

"The price for freedom is eternal vigilance."

I hope with all I have in me that freedom of expression in this trial will prevail. Not only that I will be acquitted, but that the freedom of speech will continue to exist.

Finally, Mr. Chairman, members of the court. In this trial it of course is about the freedom of expression. But in this trial it is certainly also about finding the truth. The statements I have made, the comparisons I have drawn — are they true? As mentioned in the summons? Because if something is true, how can it be illegal?

Therefore I ask you strongly not only to grant my request for the hearing of witnesses and experts in the field of freedom of speech. But I also ask you explicitly to honor my requests for the hearing of witnesses and experts on the field of Islam, all in full publicity. I hereby am not only referring to the gentleman Jansen and Admiraal but also on the expert witnesses from Israel, the United States, the United Kingdom and other countries. Preferably, all.

I must have the ability to defend myself. I must prove you that I have spoken the truth, please do not obstruct me from that. Because without these witnesses, I cannot defend myself well and in my view it will be out of the question that this is a fair trial.

Thank you.

If there was any justice in the Netherlands Geert Wilders would not be on trial for putting together a short film comprised of ACTUAL footage showing fundamentalist atrocities and incitement to murder and hatred by clerics of the so called religion of peace.

This trial is a travesty. If he is convicted and imprisoned then that is one more light of freedom that has been doused. There aren't enough of them left. For everyone's sake, let common sense prevail.

Truthful, dignified, and above all courageous. This man is worth more than any British politician, none of whom I think would be capable of such a speech.

You are right - he speaks for us all.

Your Grace, your link to the Merseyside couple recently acquitted of so called hate-crime, even though they have suffered the destruction of their business during the course of the trial, is apt, but a more pertinent case exists.

Nick Griffin and another member of the party that dare not speak it's name were twice acquitted for saying 'Islam is a wicked and vicious faith'. Upon hearing of the second acquittal, the NuLab response was to say that they intended to change the Law to enable them to be prosecuted again.

However much one may like or dislike Mr Griffin, he is an elected member of a democratic and legal institution and if elected representatives are prevented from speaking their minds, and those of their electorate, it really is over.

Geert Wilders will likely be convicted, and if he is his chances in a muslim dominated prison are slim. May the Lord bless him and keep him.

However I think saying...

Is a tad misleading ,T jefferson of course is the same man who in his life time owned over 200 slaves and even after the American Constitution was written and of which he was party too he still refused to emancipate any of his slaves...hypocrisy again see!

In Eutopia truth is no defence. It matters not how many witnesses prove Mr Wilders observations to be truthful statements of fact. What is relevant is that his observations are illegal. In other words being factually correct is inexcusable if one is not politically correct.

This is not a trial by jury. Mr Wilders is being tried by government appointed judges and in real danger of being convicted for telling the truth when political correctness required suppression of it. Freedom of speech is also on trial here and if he is found guilty it will go down with him. The implications of that are Orwellian.

The clocks are already striking thirteen.

To quote the good man himself:

"Islam is the Trojan Horse in Europe. If we do not stop Islamification now, Eurabia and Netherabia will just be a matter of time. One century ago, there were approximately 50 Muslims in the Netherlands. Today, there are about 1 million Muslims in this country. Where will it end? We are heading for the end of European and Dutch civilisation as we know it. Where is our Prime Minister in all this?
In reply to my questions in the House he said, without batting an eyelid, that there is no question of our country being Islamified. Now, this reply constituted a historical error as soon as it was uttered. Very many Dutch citizens, Madam Speaker, experience the presence of Islam around them. And I can report that they have had enough of burkas, headscarves, the ritual slaughter of animals, so‑called honour revenge, blaring minarets, female circumcision, hymen restoration operations, abuse of homosexuals, Turkish and Arabic on the buses and trains as well as on town hall leaflets, halal meat at grocery shops and department stores, Sharia exams, the Finance Minister's Sharia mortgages, and the enormous overrepresentation of Muslims in the area of crime, including Moroccan street terrorists."

I trust that his Grace is enjoying a nice bottle of red or a good port or brandy with a Cuban cigar.

I visited Her Majesty's Imperial Dominion of Canada a few years back and recall that there is a garden in the Capital city, Ottawa, in which there are planted many tulips, which are imported every year from Holland, as a goodwill gesture to Canada for her role in liberating Europe and in particular the Dutch. I also recall that there was at least one King of England who was also Dutch. So the British Empire feels that the Dutch are her kith and kin.

But how sad that it has come to this; that a man is to be tried and convicted on such spurious grounds as those presented before this court; surely whether one agrees with Wilders or not he should be free to his opinion and also to justify his views? Alas, this is an inevitable conclusion to the long march of the socialist European Union, which has been aided and abetted by the political correct classes of Europe, in which free thought and argument is consumed to the gods of the politically correct world. And our government are the worst rotters., whilst they are unable to do anything about the terror threat, because of political correctness, they are at the same time raising the terror threat level for our country. Furthermore with Harriet Harman's equality bill, we shall soon see such show trials in Britain. Christians (and atheists and gays) will be persecuted in the name of Islam.

For the past millennium the Hereditary Peers sat in the House of Lords and defended this country against all enemies- domestic or foreign. But we are now cast out of that chamber and as people can see the consequence has been a plethora of loathsome legislation that has been past by this socialist ; thus our last line of defence for liberty has crumbled , which is why the equality bill is likely to pass into UK law . Let us pray that God will deliver us from such a totalitarianism and that he will also sway the justices who are trying Wilders. If not, then we are to face a dark age of Christian discrimination, both in Europe and at home.

I think there is much confusion about the word Allah and God. The Arab Christians call the God of the bible Allah.
However the Allah of Islam is not the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.
I am surprised muslims don`t question this( perhaps they are afraid to?)
Islam draws its authority from the Torah and the Gospel but denies the truth contained in them.

When one reads the Bible and the Koran side by side it is clear that both cannot be true since they contradict each other on vital issues concerning the faith. On a superficial level there are some similarities in the portrait of Jesus in the Koran and the New Testament – both say he was born to a virgin, lived a sinless life, performed miracles. Muslims also believe that Jesus will come again to the earth. But on close examination it is clear that the Koran is speaking of ‘another Jesus’ who in essence is entirely different from the Lord Jesus revealed in the New Testament.

Everyone who truly desires to live in peace, irrespective of belief must surely support him. I think the final battle in these last days, religiously speaking will be about the true identity of Jesus Christ.
Islam claims Jesus Christ was not divine just a prophet, and that he was not crucified.
This obviously cannot be correct.Jesus Claimed to be God,
Jesus’ claim about Himself
John 8:58-59: "‘I tell you the truth,’ Jesus answered, ‘before Abraham was born, I am!’ At this, they picked up stones to stone him, but Jesus hid himself, slipping away from the temple grounds.”

This is a powerful double claim from Jesus: first, that He pre-existed His human birth and was actually alive and present (as God) before Abraham; second, that His title was “I am” -- which was the same title used for Jehovah God in Exodus 3:14. His listeners again got the point, and picked up stones to execute Him.
.................

So Jesus was either mad, a liar,or exactly as He claimed to be- God, just saying Jesus was a prophet or a 'good man' makes no sense.

Once one has a revelation as to the true identity of Jesus Christ it is like turning a key in a lock and the truth is revealed.
Jesus said" You will know the Truth( About Jesus )and the Truth will set you free.
It takes a revelation given by the grace of God to break through the barriers of superstition, prejudice, religious dogmas and traditions of men,to reveal the living reality of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Deuteronomy 4:29
'But if from there you seek the Lord your God, you will find him if you look for him with all your heart
and with all your soul.'

Although I am not sure you will have a positive response from Dutchlion. He is also on record as saying that the recent tragedy in Haiti is due to an American "super weapon". Clearly the chap is insane and has been watching a re-run of the film "the core". Poor chap. I hope that he gets better.

@ I am Stan:

Your initial comment was itself misleading; it was true, but it was a half-truth. Only you can know whether this was a lie of omission or simply ignorance.

Jefferson indeed owned slaves; certainly not a perfect man, while speaking of the natural right to liberty for all mankind he could never bring himself to free his own slaves (although several of the U.S. founders did). However, Jefferson was accutely aware of his own hipocracy, and in fact supported the abolition of slavery. He wrote that the institution of slavery was not only unjust to the slaves, but also corrosive to the morality of the slave-owners. He thought that the existence of slavery in the United States was wrong, but also understood that by the time the United States was founded the economy of the Southern states (and thus most of the U.S.) was based on slave labor, and that a sudden disruption of that would bring about an economic catastrophe that might rock the young republic to such an extent as to lead to its destruction. He did, however, advocate a gradual abolition of the "curious institution."

Also, Jefferson had very little to do with the U.S. Constitution. He was in France at the time of its drafting (serving as ambassador, if I recall correctly), and in fact was opposed to the forming of a constitution becaus he felt the Articles of Confederation were adequate. It was this opposition to the Constitution that motivated him to urge James Madison to draft the Bill of Rights; Madison, the key architect of the Constitution, himself felt that a Bill of Rights was superfluous, and perhaps even dangerous, because it might suggest that the people have enumerrated rights and the government had powers excepting with regard to those rights, whereas the idea behind the constitution was exactly the opposite-- that the government has limited, enumerated powers, and tha the people an states retained all power not specifically stated in the body of the Constitution

Jefferson opposed slavery but was unable to free his slaves because he was deeply in debt. (To have given away any substantial property, in defiance of legitimate creditors, would have been a violation of the law.)

Furthermore, he made sure that all his slaves were trained in useful occupations. (By law, a slave could be freed only if he/she could be self-supporting.)

So, Stan, are you woefully ignorant or shamefully dishonest?

And why do you want to bring up irrelevancies into a discussion of the left's persecution of Geert Wilders? Do you just like to throw disruptive hand grenades into conversations?

"T jefferson of course is the same man who in his life time owned over 200 slaves and even after the American Constitution was written and of which he was party too he still refused to emancipate any of his slaves...hypocrisy again see!"

-as Jefferson was perpetually in debt, slaves, that is, his property, could not be freed as his creditors would claim them regardless. It was illegal for him to do without his debts being addressed first.

Wilders is an admirable man fighting a brave and honorable battle on a field that is far from level. Political correctness and multiculturalism have overtaken the intellectual elite from which the judges are drawn, and the jihadists have learned how to abuse the system in a most dishonest fashion using taqiyya. For a discussion of taqiyya see http://www.meforum.org/2538/taqiyya-islam-rules-of-war

Very troubling. F

Very simplistic and moronic analysis. You might as well claim the Founders were hypocrites because they didn't address equality for women or animal rights.

Cultures EVOLVE. Its a step-by-step process. The Founders laid the framework that led to the abolition of slavery.

They will have to convict Geert Wilders because what judge is going to sit on that court case and aquit him and then go and live in a max security self imposed prison for the rest of their lives while they wait for the muslims to kill them.

Judges in all western countries are nothing but cowards kowtowing to political correctness anyway. For the time being, it is politically incorrect to insult Islam. Since when does politically correct mean......correct. Geert is wasting his time proving that what he has said it true....political correctness trumps truth in our society. Political correctness even trumps the law. Ask any woman who has planned and carried out the murder of her husband while he sleeps in bed.......after she took out a life insurance policy. Then said he had subjected her to abuse....no proof.....not a shred......ask her about the power of political correctness vs truth or law. And tell me Islam is any worse then our society.

I think it somewhat alarming that George Orwells '1984'seems to be being used as a blueprint for the E U. Newspeak, the name used in "1984" to describe the manipulation of language to prevent dissenting thoughts being expressed, is almost identical to Politically Correct speech. A fact that has not prevented this grotesque perversion becoming officially adopted by Universities and the Public Service and beyond.

Dear mr. I am stan Thomas Jefferson dedicated so much of his life to public service that he was perpetually in debt and all his property including his slaves were fully mortgaged by the time he stepped down for office in 1809. He lived on his property Monticello until his death by the sufferance of his friends who paid to hold his creditors from foreclosing during his lifetime. After his death all his assets were sold and the house itself was only saved to the public because it was purchased and donated by charitable subscription. At the time Negro slaves were worth more than 1000 dollars apiece in the money of that day, a vast sum when one considers that a free wage in the north was a dollar a day and His creditors would certainly not have stood by idly while Jefferson gave away their assets. Finally, Even if the courts of law would have allowed him to alienate mortgaged assets, which they would have not, Jefferson himself would have regarded that particular act of emancipation of what was other people's property as an act of rank hypocracy, not of example, as it would essentially cost him nothing while other large plantation owners doing the same would be bankrupted. If you don't believe you have to own something free and clear, before you can give it away, try going to a car dealer, buying a vehicle by financing the purchase with a loan, then giving it to charity. It doesn't work.

Couldn't agree more with the fascist ranting of dutchlion and Adrian P. Clearly not only was Hitler a very nice man, but he didn't mean to gas all those millions of Jews (oh wait, I bet you'll tell me that didn't happen) and that people like Lord Lavendon are traitors because they decided to stand up to the wickedness of fascism. Clearly the muslims are like the jews used to be then and have to be put into concentration and gassed, as like the jew they are all vermin and uncivilisied as rodents.

Just like there are UFO's, Barrack Obama is white or not even an American and the Titanic never sunk.

Sigh! I only hope that this popular blog does not get swamped with anymore conspiracy theory nutters.

World verification as asole by the way (one letter out to describe Dutch "Churchill was a warcriminal" lion and Adrian "Hitler was lovely" P)

@Adrian P: I am glad that you are one - alas of the very few though - who are willing to allow other voices to speak, and not to remain imprisoned by your mindset.

The emotional, non-factual, response against the statements of truth as they have not read in the public media, you and I made, gives evidence of the level of their brainwashing.

Is there any hope these people and the general public will ever allow the truth to change their opinions? When people on this Blog already shout and protest so loud? Despite the fact that they can check the links and find out?

Come on Dutch, a bit of a hypocritical post there. Almost as bad as Singh.

I read your links, and kept note of what was said but at the end of the day there are other statments made elsewhere that refute the claims. So until there is catagorical proof in either direction it is just one source against another.

So I must adpot a stance of "I don't know", either claim seems at least plausible though.

But to blindly stumble from one camp into your camp of belief just smacks of what you complain about in your post, that is blind obedience and brain washing.

Mr Glovner,
Adopting a stance of " I don`t know"
this surely is progress,
If you keep this up you may stumble across God one day.
