Macmillan: ‘Events, dear boy. Events’... Cameron: ‘Shit happens’

It was widely reported (via Twitter) that at last night’s Spectator awards ceremony, the Prime Minister said, “Shit happens.”

This is true; it does.

Perhaps we should not be so shocked, for although the OED indicates the term is coarse sl, it is clearly one of those words which is passing through a transitional phase towards common acceptability; its coarseness and vulgarity are being reassessed and the vernacular is expanding to embrace a meaning beyond the expulsion of faeces from the body.

‘Shit happens’: difficult or unpleasant things occur.

It is simply the 21st-century equivalent of ‘Events, dear boy. Events’.

This was the response given by another Old Etonian, Harold Macmillan, when he was asked by a journalist what can most easily steer a government off course. ‘Events, dear boy. Events’ has entered the political lexicon as a circumlocution for the unpredictability of politics.

Today’s synonym is ‘Shit happens’.

Perhaps it shows a certain lowering of the tone, decline in culture, finesse, manners.

Or perhaps not.

Words only offend if one’s speech is not crafted to suit one’s audience: a vulgar word or phrase is not so vulgar amongst the vulgar. The Prime Minister was addressing other MPs at a Spectator party: doubtless far worse things have been said at such gatherings by far more elevated personages than the Prime Minister, notwithstanding that the ceremony will probably be broadcast on national television at some point.

And then the shit will hit the fan.

And while the Prime Minister will doubtless not give a shit, his aides and spokesmen may feel as though they are up a certain creak without a paddle.

But this is trivial: we easily forget that the Authorised Version of the Bible talks of ‘piss’ (2Kng 18:27; Isa 36:12; 1Sam 25:22, etc’, etc.). While Scripture talks of Saul going in ‘to cover his feet’ (1Sam 24:3), David Cameron would say ‘to take a dump’.

His Grace could dwell further on this, but he wants to come to something a little more significant.

In yesterday’s Prime Minister’s Questions, Labour MP Brian Donohoe asked if David Cameron would visit Ayrshire to witness the highest unemployment in Scotland. And he used an interesting phrase:

If Mohammed will not come to Ayrshire, is it possible, given the reports in the national press about Irvine, the largest town in my constituency, having the highest unemployment in Scotland, that he would meet a small delegation to discuss the question of unemployment?
This was, of course, an allusion to Frances Bacon’s Essays of 1625, in which he wrote:

Mahomet cald the Hill to come to him. And when the Hill stood still, he was neuer a whit abashed, but said; If the Hill will not come to Mahomet, Mahomet wil go to the hil.
Within a few years of publication 'mountain' had replaced ‘hill', and by 1643 the saying had become:

If the mountaine will not come to Mahomet, Mahomet will goe to the mountaine.
As ever, there are various spellings of the name of the founder of Islam - Muhammad, Mahomet, Mohammed, Muhammed etc.

But it was a curious irreverence (coming from a Labour MP) in today’s hyper-sensitivity surrounding all things Islamic.

Which brings His Grace to a delicious irony.

He reported some months ago on the fact that the nation was surreptitiously being force-fed halal meat through supermarkets, cafés, fast-food outlets and hospitals. And he had reported some years before this that schoolchildren were being fed halal meat without parental knowledge or consent.

Well, it transpires that halal meat has been secretly served in House of Commons restaurants for quite some time.

Mohammed may not have gone to the mountain, or even to Ayrshire. But he has certainly visited the pantry of the Parliamentary catering service.

They feign innocence, protesting that it is not known how they could have ‘unknowingly received’ poultry slaughtered in accordance with Islamic law.

Try: 'lack of accurate labelling'.

It is very simple.

Of course, this revelation is of the utmost concern to Sikh MPs, who are forbidden to eat meat 'killed in the Muslim way'. And also to those Christians who might believe the meat to have been 'offered to idols' (1Cor 10:14-32).

Conservative MP Greg Knight said: “Suppliers seem to be going for the option of making everyone eat halal so they don’t inadvertently offend a Muslim. I don’t think that’s the way forward; the way forward is proper labelling. I prefer to eat meat where the animal has been killed humanely and without suffering.”

Philip Hollobone MP added: “I am angry because I don’t think it is that difficult a problem to solve. It just needs the political will to do it. We’re waiting for Europe to do something rather than taking the initiative ourselves or maybe the Government is frightened about upsetting the ethnic minorities.”

Ah, waiting for ‘Europe’.

Perhaps the mountain will come to Mohammed first.

If it doesn’t, doubtless more shit will happen.

Ah! For years Conservatives have railed against the nanny-state. Now they have succumbed to the supra-nanny-state.

‘Philip Hollobone MP added: “I am angry because I don’t think it is that difficult a problem to solve. It just needs the political will to do it. We’re waiting for Europe to do something rather than taking the initiative ourselves…” ’

Is this a case of, if the Conservatives don’t go to the EU then the EU shall come to them?

What an admission of servility: “We’re waiting for Europe to do something rather than taking the initiative ourselves…”

Can someone please tell me why we are paying taxes for MPs who are waiting for the Government in Brussels to act?

Please tell me what is the point of having MPs.

In your article of yesterday, it was reported (almost certainly with fair accuracy) that 3% of the UK population are Muslim and less than 1% are of the Jewish religion.

Of course, as you point out, it is rather difficult not to offend the religious beliefs of some by observing (that is forced hidden compliance with) the religious practices of others.

Importantly to more people, surely given these lowish figures, most of us could get our meat both more humanely and more cheaply. This is in terms of methods of slaughter.

Best regards

Your Grace, thank you for a deliciously poetic piece of twin-thread blogging. I aspire to such standards!

I had my attention drawn to the Halal issue by your blog and have changed my habits accordingly. If I cannot be sure of the source, I only buy meat which would offend a Muslim.

I can set your grace's mind at rest that he will not starve at the Palace of Westminster if he joins me in my quiet economic protest.

Your Grace,

While the point was made, it did suffer my eyes and moral obedience to scripture to read the vulgar wording which was imo overly used in this post. For while the words of the vulgar are used, it shows a lack of vocabulary knowledge that one could not use a more eloquent way of putting it.

To me, it does show the denigration of parliament, not that parliament should be full of upper class people, but that they are meant to be gentlemen and behave in a way that inspires and elevates. The same can be said of their raucaus behaviour during PMQs too I might add.

As for the Halal meat, I concur that they should quickly put through an amendment to whichever law exists at present to include whether the meat has undergone a particular killing method.

I'm glad someone has raised a matter which I had been thinking of, namely halal meat as "meat offered to idols"(1Cor 10:14-32). And the more one reads of the nature and origin of Islam, and halal slughter, the more one is revolted by it - try reading this if you can (I had to pass, too awful):

The meat industry appears to be licking its lips at halal slaughter. A recent article, Halal here we come, says:

❛Educating the population about halal meat, production methods and quality standards has helped moving its sale out of purely Muslim communities into mainstream trading. But it will not be straightforward. While the non-Muslim industry strives to fully understand the sector, Muslims themselves recognise the need to harmonise different interpretations of halal practices, counter misunderstandings and to raise standards.❜

Some of the ‘misunderstandings’ are touched on in this story, mentioned by John Thomas (13:39), from the Daily Mail:

❛Grabbing one lamb at a time, he pulls back its head and slits the throat with a swift movement from his razor-sharp knife. Blood gushes everywhere as he recites the Islamic Bismillah prayer in Arabic: ‘In the name of Allah, the most gracious, the most merciful.’

One of the supervisors, who oversees the firm’s 50 or so largely Muslim employees, explains to me the religious principle behind this process. ‘Animals that are stunned are not halal. An animal that is unconscious is not going to listen to the prayer. In the Holy Book, it says that the animal should listen to the prayers of Allah. If it’s unconscious, then it won’t be able to do that.’

Though the deep incision to the neck cuts through the animal’s windpipe and main arteries, the creatures are still able to cry out.❜

Nice piece. Such vernacular is not the preserve of politicians only. In a very weak link, Harold Macmillan's mother Nellie took umbrage against her son's High Church tutor, Fr.Ronald Knox (who later became RC). She had him fired as a bad influence. So that was one event in Macmillan's life.

Bishop Richard Holloway, erstwhile prelate of Edinburgh, was on his way down to London for a meeting when he was advised of some news. "Well, the shit's hit the fan!" he remarked, to a rather astonished group of passengers. Very canonical!

No, at least nothing so primitively backward;- but we have British Laws for animal welfare which should never be compromised. If Muslims and Jews want religiously slaughtered meat/products they should source and import/sell it separately.
Presumably Immigrants came to this Country because something of its culture and future offered more than they could get elsewhere - our big mistake was making them welcome to bring their backward culture and religions with them.

@ srizals (14:52)—We could go on like this ad infinitum! This report from a British newspaper, The Independent, quotes the Government’s animal welfare advisers as saying that the ‘slaughter techniques practised by Jews and Muslims are cruel and should be ended’.

East and West clearly have different views on how animals should be treated. To most Westerners, slaughtering a conscious animal is wrong and they object to being fed meat from such slaughter. This isn’t a religious matter as such but a concern for animal welfare.

It doesn't matter which idol an animal is sacrificed to, for as St Paul explained an idol is nothing at all.
Although as Christians we are free to eat anything slaughtered for the marketplace without raising questions of conscience, what should concern us all is the inhumane way animals are slaughtered by some religions and we can address this by demanding a ban on such practices and boycotting known suppliers.

But Johnny, if humane practise is the issue here, it is backed by scientific research. Research, scientifically done, proved that stunned animal still feels pain, and suffered 2 times more, halal way reduces the pain and made it quick.

By the way, do you know how the US dealt with its sadistic criminals in the Green Mile, Johnny? They stunned them with electricity. I don't think we should treat the animals like criminals before devouring them now, do we?

I quote, ‘The U.S. Department of Agriculture documented 14 humane slaughter violations at one processing plant, where inspectors found hogs who "were walking and squealing after being stunned [with a stun gun] as many as four times."

being humane

‘Another potential Mad Cow risk factor not present in kosher slaughtered meat is the stunning of cows with a blow to the head, a practice now banned by the new USDA regulations. The fatal stunning blow to the animal's skull often winds splattering potentially infected brain matter throughout the animal's body, contaminating muscles and organs that would otherwise not pose a danger of spreading the Mad Cow infection.’

real danger

Some more,

"If slaughterhouses had glass walls, everyone would be vegetarian."
– Sir Paul McCartney.

I think you should watch it to get the idea of the effectiveness of stunning the poor animals.

Let me ask some questions, in the vain hope that some of you may start to understand why this particular piece of shit is happening. I refer to the increasing use and availability of Halal meat, and to a lesser extent the way our elected/selected political leaders 'progressively' use/abuse the English language.

Does this realization make you feel generally insecure?

Does this realization make you feel just a little bit more of a stranger in the place of your birth?

Does this realization make you feel ( completely irrationally I may add) that Muslims are about to take over the country?

Does this realization make you feel that either or both of the middle-eastern wars that our sons are currently dying in actually have some kind of useful to us purpose?

Does this realization make you feel more suspicious of the motives of your elected government and that of our fellow Muslim citizens/brothers?

If your answer is yes, to either one, some, or all of the above, then you should now KNOW for sure why this is happening.

For those who are still not sure, what in this hell I am talking about, please try your best to read on.

The establishment have purposefully and secretly conspired to diminish your confidence in your country, its elected government, and most of all yourself.

Of course this is a small matter in relation to countless other issues, such as deliberately caused economic chaos, and so called international or home-grown Islamic terrorism. You could therefore simply see this as a matter of "Just Another Brick In The Wall."

Destroying particular nations and there specific cultures can be a tricky business, therefore the very well tried and tested 'boiling the frog' method can come in extremely useful. This especially when fighting an more overt civil-war on the people of your own nation is a messy as well as a practical no-starter.

Slowly, slowly, catch the monkey.

The truth is that, you feel the way you do, almost entirely because the proverbial THEY want you to feel this way for whatever reason they may wish at the time. When or if the situation and therefore the long or short term needs of the establishment change, they will make you feel better or very likely worse.

Forgive me for stating the obvious, however I do feel that someone has to.

I wonder if a more time appropiate saying is "shit is created" or perhaps "out of the mouths of europhile gravy train travellers" . I often associate this term with that sort of American indiffernce "yeah you know , shit happens" when describing some unimagined piece of badluck , but avoiding depression .

Like many who get powerful jobs perhaps you go in with one plan and come out the other end with another with plenty of shit or shits along the way .We are 6 months into the coalition and having been nearly ended by the alchemy of Lib/conservative joining , he now has a large dump of oderious new debt floating its way towards our wave tossed tax payers and an uncertain economy after that.
Perhaps he said "debt happens" , but then you begin to wonder how a handfull of banks ran or concealed its risks and exposure , what did the celtic tigers goverment presumme would be the end of a massive property bubble ?? or why it became dodge city full of high rollers who contrived the deals and silenced the alarms ??.

Of course I feel slightly justified for wanting out of the EU now , the europhiles have cost us an awfull lot of money . UK banks are exposed to £88bn of Irish economy , for a population of some 6mn people , to put that into perspective , the UK is somewhere near to £100bn plus on 60mn people (and it will be difficult for us).

The tradegy of the greed was further brought home to me yesterday when two men stabbed and killed wifes and children to death , so it isnt just the money , long established small businesses are getting the plug pulled and it could break up many lives if property firesales take place .
So it is not the game of pass the debt politicians that we should worry about , it will the hits taken by those warm and friendly folk with spirits full of life , who never for a monet thought there goverment would run a Dodge city for special people , and leave then with the bill and the sorrows .
I just hope god is talking to those people who can run credit unions , gather and run charity shops and that the priests can find somthing in there vocation to help . I further hope ireland remains a close friend of the UK , other have covered the political meanings , but I for one would miss those laughs and , the rants that avoid swearing and its Celtic music which has such a following over here . The troubles , well I hope one day it will be seen as a long running argument whilst we were both being quietly robbed by the socialists and euro socilists .

Ireland may have voted in a band of shits , but we have little to crow about with the last lot .Dont lose your god given spirit and love ireland

Or to be Biblical 'you shall know them by their fruits'
A good tree cannot produce bad fruit (and the reverse) a bad tree cannot produce good fruit.

Now look at the lives of Jesus Christ and compare it to the life of Mohammed.

Anticipating your answer, you are probably going to refer to the Crusades and the atrocities committed by both sides, so I refer to the Leaders of both Religions and the teachings of both Jesus and Mohammed.
The Crusaders were clearly not following the teachings of Jesus Christ, quite the reverse in fact.

Mohammed heard one of his wives was leaving him, so he rushed home where he found her on the carpet in front of the tent with her belongings; he sat beside her and said, "I heard you were planning to leave me?"
She replied, "Yes, I heard your other wives saying you were a paedophile!"

Well God the Creator is more powerful than the created Satan.

Satan takes what God means for good and twists and corrupts it to line up with his own nature, all who are in rebellion against the God of the Bible(Yahweh the God of Abraham,Isaac, and Jacob) are under the authority of Satan (who gained this authority by deception)and are in effect his subjects and under his authority, mostly unknowingly
Jesus came to take back this authority and release all who are in satan`s power.Religion cannot do this! Only the power of God can set people free.
What satan wants is worship and to actually replace the true God and he gets worship through counterfeit religions.

The condemnation in Revelation 2 regarding sacrificed meat is also linked with sexual immorality so it probably refers to participation in orgies held in an idol's temple and idol worship as well.

In our 21st Century context I think Revelation 2 is telling us not to eat halal meat in the company of Muslims and join them in bowing down to Allah. This is a world away from buying meat in a supermarket without knowing or asking whether it is halal or not.

If halal meat was clearly labeled I would not buy it on animal welfare grounds but anyone whose conscience is offended by the religious ritual involved should avoid halal meat for that reason alone.

Kalimantan was the focus for an intense transmigration program (Islamization) that financed the relocation of poor landless families (muslim) from Java, Madura, and Bali.

In 2000, transmigrants made up 21% of the population in Central Kalimantan.

Kiwi, I thought the Kiwi bird is not that arrogantly stupid. Careful now, you might go extinct sooner than you think.

Jihad is a self actualization. The Jihad against overwhelming oppressors and aggressors that without any shame destroy and ruin one's country is what any normal human being would do in the face of tyranny. The British didn't hug the Germans then and 'love thy enemy' nor 'turn the other cheek', they toasted them without any apparent reason in Dresden as a payback.

The suicide bombers have gone astray. They shouldn't have killed themselves with helpless civilians, but then, all Israeli are reserved army personnel, so how?

Where is your proof that Islam is the end result of all religion of this world Len?

And please state your proof that the teaching of Muhammad is inspiring the terrorists.

As for Jesus Christ, he had 12 men behind him against all the Roman armies and the Jews. Your reasoning is weak. But I'll provide some proof for you, as you say, the teaching of Jesus. To be continued. Have to go somewhere with the Misses.

srizals: sense of humour failure, ad hominen, is that the best you can do?
If my little joke made you feel uncomfortable, perhaps you can explain why, 'the model for all mankind', a 50 year-old cult leader, 'married' a 6 year old child - that marriage then being consummated when the girl-child is a mere 8 years and nine months old? Some inaccuracy maybe? I stand to be corrected.

Fo some of us need to repent? There is a great deal of suffering in unemployment, and of food dedicated to other "gods" is not delightful either?
Please could any of you who have not noticed that the spending cuts are going to cause a lot of affliction to the most vulnerable in society on the UK including many poor or sick veterans consider asking the Holy Soirit to enlighten you?
I hate personally find looking down on the suffering or using them for idle gossip distasteful - they are real people for whom Christ died. Whyare there no comments on their plight?
And on the subject of sh.. happening. There will be lot of that on the Day of Jedgment for those who unnecessarily and willfully afflict afflictions on the vulnerable. Remember, even eveil spitis believe in Jesus, just not in a way that saves their souls.

Do some of us need to repent? There is a great deal of suffering in unemployment, and of food dedicated to other "gods" is not delightful either - are these two serious topics just fodder for some "intellecutal" discussions which are in truth shallow?
Please could any of you who have not noticed that the spending cuts are going to cause a lot of affliction to the most vulnerable in society on the UK including many poor or sick veterans consider asking the Holy Spirit to enlighten you as to why this is something very dear to the Lord's heart, and not something he approves of given the fact that the brunt of the suffering falls on the most vulnerable? Have those who approve of the where the cuts fall considered the concept of dispoable income in their formulae of what is fair?
I personally find looking down on the suffering or using them for idle gossip distasteful - they are real people for whom Christ died. Why are there no comments on their plight, since His Grace has mentioned some unemployed?
And on the subject of sh.. happening. There will be lot of that on the Day of Jedgment for those who unnecessarily and willfully afflict afflictions on the most vulnerable while sparing those who have more. Remember, even evil spirits believe in Jesus, just not in a way that saves their souls from eternal damnation. And if you don't believe that, why does the book of Corinthians command genuine Christians to avoid those who profess Christ and are greedy - and have any who approve of the package of cuts read Revelations? Btw Revelations and "the poor will always be with you" are not to be read as an excuse to cause unnecessary affliction or hunger or suffering including through unnecessary speculation in the commodity markets or through slashing help to the poorer. Poverty btw is not per capita income, but the lack of ability to pay for shelter, food, clothing, basic health care, education etc. Where are the investments to help create jobs or to treain people so they can be employed? What about infrastructure ie buses and trains so people can get to jobs and cheaply? What about childcare? What about literacy numeracy and computer skills? Do any on this blog care? I ask this in desperation becuase the needy are dear to our Lord's heart and employment and welfare are political subjects. Did our Lord save us so that we would just spend time enjoying clever conversations? Could those on this blog who don't care about the poor or unemployed just be honest - I challenge you to say that to our Lord if that is how you truly feel in your hearts and ask Him to give you His heart for those who are and will be suffering.

Kiwi you silly old bird, been there, done that, please browse in some of the old postings in his grace blog and then get back to me. Frankly speaking, I'm quite bored speaking about the same old topic, with the same old reply, but if you insist, after you've read my previous comment, maybe I'll repeat myself again, for a cocky little bird such as you.

Never mind the humane or inhumane, even if you don't care about animals, you don't want to eat halal meat because it's heavily contaminated with stress hormones.

Animal welfare is not the prime motivator for stunning -- handling safety and meat quality are what is more important, which is why stunning has been practiced in our culture way before we ever cared about animal welfare.

Unstunned meat is contaminated with many stress hormones due to the cruel handling methods and the massive stress and pain that bleeding out causes a conscious animal, and the 'halal' method does not bleed the carcass out properly either.

What are you doing on this blog? You appear to have at least 2 brain cells to rub together.

May I please correct you on Catholic shit:

"If Shit Happens, you deserve it!"

That is Catholic doctrine.

"You were born shit, you are shit, and you will die shit."

That is Calvinism, predeterminism, or the doctrine of predetermination.

May I also suggest you have too many brain cells for this blog.

Jihad is terrorism. It is against the law to incite violence. The Islamic religion should be recognised as a dangerous threat to civilised society and banned along with the klu klux klan (note they have similar uniforms)No decent human being could support your violent beliefs.

If you care to look at sizzles profile you will see that he is A Muslim dedicated to As sunnah wal Jama'ah

Interestingly Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah Adherents to the Sunnah and the community or Followers of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaah; alternately transliterated: Ahl ul-Sunnah Wa al-Jamma; ASWJ) is an Islamic organization operating in the United Kingdom, intended to be a successor to the banned Al-Muhajiroun organization. Founded in November 2005 in north London, its head is "Simon" Sulayman Keeler. Also attending the organization's launch were Anjem Choudary, the former head of al-Muhajiroun, Abu Yahya, Abu Izzadeen

Shiva @ 8.08

Do you mean that srizals isn't the 'nice boy' we have all come to love and respect ?!?!?!? You mean he isn't the 'seeker of truth' that he purports to be?!?!?!?

My God, we've been fooled chaps!

Shiva, now my apologies for my 'Madurese' crack, I wasn't applauding the dreadful deeds at Sampit, just teasing srizals on his own ground, as it were.

However, now that you have enlightened us to the true nature of the very naughty boy that he undoubtably is, I must remember to 'post early for Christmas' to Sarawak!

Oh no sizzle has not fooled you, you have most probably fooled yourselves, he is no doubt a seeker of truth, butt the islamic concept of truth is far different than our concept, in islam dualism is accepted.

No problem about the Madurese crack. What happened in Sampit was terrible, yet one must not lose sight, it was a reaction to the aggressive nature of the Madurese, who are known for their aggression and islamic fanaticism.

Klu Klux Klan and their burning cross, hmm. Sydneysider, step aside before you hurt yourself.

Shiva, your simplistic notion of a dog won't help much I'm afraid. And dodging questions won't do much good either, for your credibility in writing something on Islam that is, even if you're a dog.

And if you refer to the Batak's brutalities, you'll be surprised they survived in the land where the majority of Muslims reside. Should we associate their religion with their behaviours?

So tell me Shiva, what are you?

The Koran says that a kafir (unbeliever) can be robbed, killed, tortured, mocked, insulted, beheaded, raped, crucified and on and on. The Hadith and the Sira agree with the Koran. Every single reference to the kafirs is negative, offensive and hateful.

The word "kafir" illustrates both of political Islam's principles--submission and duality. The Trilogy (Koran, Sira and Hadith) says that every kafir in the world must submit to political Islam.

The Koran also establishes dualism with its ethical system. A Muslim is not to kill another Muslim; a kafir may be killed, or not. A Muslim is not to lie to another Muslim; a kafir may be deceived or not. And so on. Islam has one set of ethics for Muslims and another set of ethics for the kafir--dualistic ethics.

The later political Koran written in Medina frequently contradicts the early religious Koran written in Mecca. The Koran gives a rule for removing the contradiction by saying that the later Koran "abrogates" the early Koran. But the earlier Koran is still true; it was given by Allah. So in Islam both sides of a contradiction can be true. This gives Islam its dualistic logic. Our unitary logic says that if two things contradict, then one of them is false

Oswin and The Observer, this is not a game for me, nor am I looking for any victory over the Internet, which is senseless and meaningless. But the liars about Islam must stand their ground. Failure to do so would be demonstrating the obvious. My advice, study about Constantine and the Council of Nicaea. You don't know what terror means until you look at it in the mirror. Shiva, nice knowing you. Till then. Cheerio.
