Wikileaks: US advises Belgium on how 'to attain prominence in Europe'

This really is priceless.

The leaked cables appear to reveal discussions between various countries on whether they would take prisoners released from the Guantánamo Bay detention facility:

When American diplomats pressed other countries to resettle detainees, they became reluctant players in a State Department version of “Let’s Make a Deal.” Slovenia was told to take a prisoner if it wanted to meet with President Obama, while the island nation of Kiribati was offered incentives worth millions of dollars to take in Chinese Muslim detainees, cables from diplomats recounted. The Americans, meanwhile, suggested that accepting more prisoners would be “a low-cost way for Belgium to attain prominence in Europe. ...”
If nothing else, this is quite an enlightening insight into how the US views EU politics and relations between member states: take a low-threat Guantánamo terrorist inmate; give him a few fancy chocolates when he lands in Brussels; the Belgian prime minister (when they have one) gets to shake hands with the President of the Untied States; and France, Germany and the UK will bow down in awe and wonder.

It will take rather more than that for Belgium to attain prominence in Europe.

But this was the 'low-cost' option.

Alternatively, they could incur huge debt, say 11 times the size of GDP; bankrupt their national treasury; make pledges to creditors which amount to 220 per cent of the country’s annual economic output; call in the IMF and the ECB; arrange a bail-out; and then default on their agreements.

Belgium will then be as prominent as Greece and Ireland.

But that is the 'high-cost' option.

As the US State Department points out, taking a Guantánamo inmate is a lot cheaper.

Unless, of course, he starts blowing you up.

A bullet is cheaper still.

And bitingly true comment from OldSouth.

Agree with your general points.

However what is with this piece of highly objectionable sexism at the end.

"Unless, of course, HE starts blowing you up."

Women, even the Muslim variety have been terrorists, as well as spies, traitors, mass murderers, liars, and therefore politicians. A sign of our apparently enlightened times.

You denigrate our lady fellow travelers by seeking to deny this fact.

Yes, the truth is that women are just as prone to manipulation towards mindless violence, materialism, ignorance, nationalism, corrupted religious dogma's, and murderous revengefulness as the rest of us.

The only difference in the past was that they were not targeted as much as they are today. In the past women where needed to create more innocent young cannon fodder for the establishments next planned genocidal war. Yet now days computers can kill millions shortly after being switched on, while the establishment have committed themselves to deducing the net population of the world by 80% over the next 20-30 years. Therefore the need for masses of surviving reproductive women is no more. The need to progressively tax their productive capacities not so much for now at least.

There was a time when a mans wife belonged to her family represented by her husband and children.

Now Socialism/Communism/Fascism/Big Business rules. Which means women are now a taxable commodity owned by the state. Women are now slaves to the same banking system that has been taxing the wages of mainly ordinary working class men for now nearly 100 years.

The ENTIRE point of feminism was to create a larger tax base for the banksters to feast themselves and their land/country owning clients on. With the added advantage of ever more destroying normal working, as well as middle class family life, thus making the role of the state ever more needed, expensive, intrusive, authoritarian, and ultimately controlling.

No, REALLY, trust me on this one, that was the ONLY point to it. A fact that the establishment at one of their less guarded of moments will be happy to admit to. Which is why it has been a runaway success at doing precisely what it was supposed to do on the tin.

Please note the above is not my opinion, it is a much needed HISTORY LESSON.

Feminism has liberated women from one form of child nurturing slavery, only to replace it with an infinitely more worthless variety, more commonly known as utterly mindless materialism.

The powers that be have been busy making whores out of ordinary mens women folk for some considerable time. This usually by carefully conspiring to kill off vast amounts of young men in otherwise pointless wars. However only now have they solved their long standing problem, usually known as the common scum, plebs, profane, or great-unwashed.

Keeping mens wages artificially low using the introduction unskilled 3rd world immigration, repeatedly humiliating young black men in particular using The BBC, Hollywood, other agents of the mass media, along with a regressive tax system also being contributing factors.

Feminism was a handed down high establishment funded agenda. It was started by the underemployed wives of The Banking Establishment using paradoxically their own husbands and families money, As shown in films such as MARY POPPINS. Then there children made to infest our great universities and teaching establishments, such as Harvard Yale, Oxford and Cambridge. This is precisely how these things have always been done in the past, and will continue to be done in the future. Only next time we will all be paying for our own children's brainwashing tutorials, abortions, drug abuse clinics, and various other head shrinkers.

Beware the establishments fascist wolf in sheep's clothing.

This is more like wiki-laughs than leaks.
I think Clinton and the pack are overplaying their hand on 'national security' to hide the sheer embarrassment and incompetence of these people and their thinking.
This has made a 'superpower' a laughing stock and rightly so.
Perhaps the American people will start to re-think the purpose of all these diplomatic missions with extraneous staff and hangers on?

Actually, OldSouth, most of us on this side of the Atlantic haven't wondered that for quite some time.

European hypocrisy is clear. Squeal about Guantanamo but then need arm-twisting and bribes to accept its inmates when even Saudi Arabia wanted them chipped and tracked.

The complete vacuity of politics in Europe is laid bare. The chancers and losers who parade and shout but have nothing of substance or belief about them.

The bankrupcy of our media and political system is laid bare. We have a System Press recycling propaganda as John Kampfner wrote in yesterday's Indie. It is so clear they are little more than Pravda
