Cut the Royals - literally

These disgusting posters have been appearing on bus shelters and payphones across North London. Prince William and Katherine Middleton are depicted beneath a guillotine dripping blood under the the heading "Cut the Royals, Not Public Services". No group has (yet) claimed responsibility, but this anti-Government campaign is not only the most shocking example of 'anti-cuts' activism yet seen in Britain; it must constitute a clear incitment to violence or murder.

Local resident Justin Hinchcliffe, Deputy Chairman of Tottenham Conservatives, said: "I saw these posters as I walked past Seven Sisters tube station today. I just could not believe them at first. I did a double-take, then tried to check who had published them--they look professionally printed. But there was no clue on the posters themselves who had distributed them."

Mr Hinchcliffe added: "This is just sick. Most people round here are looking forward to the Royal Wedding like everyone else. BT and Haringey Council should urgently remove these posters and the Police should track down whoever is responsible. It just proves how the anti-cuts lobby is being infiltrated by dangerous extremists."

I realise that I'm not buying into the hysteria on a regular basis now but aren't those posters just advocating abolishing the monarchy, albeit in a very bad taste way? It's shock jock stuff by the look of it.

I shouldn't be too hard to find the culprits; if profiling is permitted. The usual suspects must include the SWP, UAF and all the other communist/socialist/marxist organisations who take delight is such provocations.

This is typical of the left/liberal/ atheist/marxist/pro-EU brigade and is therefore not a true representation of the patriots of this country who are (regretably and brainwashed) part of labour (the lib dims are so slavishly pro-EU, anti-UK that I can't really include them).

God save the Queen! God save the Prince of Wales and his bride! Rule Britannia!

As a German I have to save that even in such a horrible photo as this Kate still looks lovely and very sexy with that nice smile and clean white teeth! I can't wait till she's queen of England (perhaps also Queen of the EU?)...

San Palo, it's trivial symbolism: royal wedding, pomp, excess, austerity, cuts, guillotine, republican, aristocracy. Ye gods.

Oh, and it's 'poof', not 'puff' you clueless numpty. If you want to try to insult then put the effort in for heaven's sake. :)

I'm not sure it's really fair to blame this on the anti-cuts campaigners. Looks far more like extremists doing some bandwagon jumping, to me.

Completely reprehensible, of course. I hope the police catch up with whoever is responsible. Advocating Republicanism is one thing; advocating murder, as these posters seem to do, is quite another.

Oh come off it!

When did metaphor and hyperbole become so difficult for people?

This is Daily Mail stuff. Are we honestly saying that somebody's going to read this poster and think "oh, I guess I'd better take a guillotine to the Royal Family")

Offensive they might be. Incitement? Hardly.

mmmmm will be interesting to see who did it , but I dont think it will spoil anything , our foes have had quite a bad time of it falling on there own spin , with only the option of losing more.

let us hope that the carnage in Libya is minimal , I very much doubt the libyans will forgive Ghaddafi even if he does claim a section of the country , but it is pretty clear that a longer struggle will require some aid and effort to quickly arrive to help , but it is there freedom not ours

I have read your blog for some time now and thought that some of your devotees were intelligent yet very misguided. As in this post of yours, everybody seems to have overlooked the fact the the monarchy of this country has been complicit in its betrayal. the Queen has counter signed five treaties that has undermined the sovereignty of this country and the rest of the royals have remained silent about it

I rather think the police have better things to do with their time rather than chase idiots who haven't actually harmed anyone with their printed rhetoric. Besides, as Anon @ 7.37 has pointed out, as I myself have highlighted on a number of occasions, Coronation Oath - foresworn - handed reins of government to a foreign power - treason - etc., etc., etc.

What is about you lot and the Royals? Why should anyone be interested in them? Why should we the taxpayer fork out for any of them? They are variously dysfunctional, undeserving and unnecessary. So “off with their heads” I say, not literally but lets have a head of State that is elected or perhaps you think democracy is not up to the task?

GD,

Actually they're a pretty good investment; they provide more in tourism than we give them; they invest in philanthropic projects, such as Prince Charles' village in Cornwall; they do not swing according to political pressure and are probably our best conviction politicians. If anyone ought to have reduced power, it's the commons, not the Lords or Monarchy.

Just because it is democratic does not make it good; just because it isn't, does not make it bad.

How can anyone who subscribes to the kind of violent metaphor and allegory that litter the Bible be so offended by such a literal interpretation of an obviously symbolic graphic representation of a perfectly reasonable sentiment? I am more offended by the constant inference that we are ALL looking forward to the Royal Wedding and those of 'them' that aren't are somehow unEnglish. Don't attempt to remove my nationality because I don't want to be part of this wasteful, vacuous and populist load of crap.

I'm not sure that the battle of Jericho is meant to be an allegory or a metaphor, even if it seems to lack historical authenticity. The Israelites murdered everyone, including children, when the walls fell according to the story. All sanctioned by their god, as they marauded through Canaan. Lovely heart-warming story there.

The Royal Family costs us what exactly? What's the going rate these days, about 67p per person?

What does immigration cost us??

What does Europe cost us???

What have the bankers cost us????

Privatise. Let them copyright their images and the wedding, sales of T shirts, souvenir mugs etc alone should pay for the cost of the monarchy, and the TV rights, syndicated world wide bring in enough to maintain the Royal Palaces. Negotiate with the UK tourist board regarding numbers of foreigners visiting for the wedding itself, that should bring in a useful royalty (no pun intended) cheque. Lets run this like a business!

Anabaptist, there are cuts to public services in order to pay the debt we've incurred by bailing out the banks. The bailout is where the cash is going, is into the pockets of the mega rich. Wake up!

And bollox to the royal wedding!

26 February 2011 at 13:06
Anonymous Simon said...

Sorry but the poster above is just wrong. We had a budget deficit of around 150 billion last year, how much of that was spent bailing out the banks?

The banks may have caused the recession but they are not the reason for our deficit.. that is down to labour and their left wing excessive spending.

Cuts must be made but there is no reason to cut funding for the royal wedding, a wedding of our future king. The funny thing is this disgusting poster will just mean the police have to pump in even more resources to ensuring the protection of Prince William and Kate.

Anarchists must be hunted down and put in prison where they belong.

RE: Oswin: 67p per person in this country, per year is a lot of money!
And thats only direct money, don't forget we pay for the upkeep of their palaces and also the queens own private regiment which guards her house! that isn't included in this sum either!!

and with regards to 'John in Cheshire' who recommended profiling the 'usual suspects'

Been republican transcends political boundaries and niches. Its not a 'left' vs 'right' thing. Its about democracy. You either believe in democracy or you don't... in which case you're happy with a part-theocracy.

It is a most horrid poster and I think most reasonable people, whether pro-monarchy or pro-republican, are sickened by it. I am myself sickened by this poster. such incitement to violence is unlawful and whoever put such posters up should be prosecuted accordingly.

Being very pro-monarchy myself, I do not support bashing of some the organisations listed here. THE EU is nowhere near as bad as people think (if you study EU law at any stage in your life, you find that Eurosecptics and Europhobes have got it so wrong), the Labour party is at generally in favour of the Monarchy (accepted some Labour MP's are republican and need bringing round to the cause) and the UAF is well intentioned but need to control its members more closely.
