Gerald Kaufman: "Here we are, the Jews again"

It has traditionally been the preserve and privilege of the comedian to be able to criticise and denigrate one’s co-ethnic fellow man without inciting wailing and gnashing of teeth. No-one accuses Rabbi Lionel Blue of being anti-Semitic, or Shazia Mirza of being Islamophobic. And doubtless there are homosexual comedians who dish out homophobia with gay abandon; and disabled comedians who get away with all manner of offences against their co-afflicted. And by ‘co-afflicted’, His Grace does not mean to say that disability is an affliction in the sense of being an evil or an illness, such as may cause physical pain or mental and emotional distress, though it may certainly be, and some would say undoubtedly is. But ‘affliction’ in the sense of that which is dealt us in life; that which may be a bane; the cross we carry daily.

Gerald Kaufman was born a Jew: it is his ethnic identity as well as his religion. The word is used hundreds of times in the Bible, and always refers to ethnic Jews (Israelites, in contrast to Gentiles). Perhaps being one of the Tanakh’s ‘Treasured People’, to whom was bequeathed the Law of God, privileges him to offend all Jewry. It’s just a pity that he can’t do it with the charismatic charm and disarming flair of Rabbi Blue.

It is reported that during a debate yesterday in the House of Commons on the Government’s plans to change the law on universal jurisdiction (which would sensibly prevent any Tom, Dick or Harry seeking an arrest warrant for any suspected war criminal), at the point the Jewess Louise Ellman MP rose to speak, Gerald Kaufman uttered from a sedentary position: "Here we are, the Jews again."

Now, Ms Ellman and Sir Gerald don’t quite see eye-to-eye on certain issues, principally the question of ‘Palestine’. And she happens to chair the Jewish Labour Movement and is Vice Chairman of Labour Friends of Israel. Such exuberant and unashamed Judophilia evidently makes her an evil Zionist in Sir Gerald’s eyes, which are firmly fixed on Al-Aqsa to the glory of Hamas.

But ‘Here we are, the Jews again’ is a curiously self-loathing complaint.

Can you imagine Sayeeda Warsi saying to Sajid Javid or Sadiq Khan: “Here we are, the Muslims again.” Or Anne Begg saying to Paul Maynard: “Here we are, the disabled again.” Or Chris Bryant saying to Nick Herbert: “Here we are, the gays again.”

Such comments do not only offend members of these minority groups; they manifest a prejudice which may offend all. Gerald Kaufman’s comment appals not only because it evidences a bigotry which will aggrieve many Jews, but because it is blatantly anti-Semitic and disgusts Gentiles as well.

In a statement released by the Labour Party, Sir Gerald said: "I regret if any remarks I made in the chamber caused offence. If they did, I apologise."

But a carefully-worded conditional apology is insufficient: there ought to be consequences, not least because this is not the first time Sir Gerald has spouted such bile: a year ago, he outrageously alleged: "Just as Lord Ashcroft owns most of the Conservative Party, right-wing Jewish millionaires own the rest." And only last December, he pleaded God’s forgiveness on the Coalition Government for their ‘complicity in Israeli war crimes’.

He plays on all the traditional anti-Semitic stereotypes which can only exacerbate racial and religious tensions. Perhaps the matter ought to be taken up by the All-Party Parliamentary Group Against Anti-Semitism. Certainly, if he were to make such comments outside of the Chamber, venturing without the protective canopy of parliamentary privilege, he would probably be arrested for inciting hatred.

And one has to wonder, on ‘universal jurisdiction’, why Gerald Kaufman can support the action taken against Israel’s former foreign minister, Tzipi Livni, who had a warrant issued for her arrest for ‘war crimes’ in December 2009, but he is not calling for the immediate arrest of Libya’s former foreign minister Moussa Koussa, who has arrived in the UK today to a hero’s welcome, despite being a close confidant of Gaddafi during his 30-year bloody and tyrannical rule; despite being expelled from the UK in 1980 for threatening political assassinations; and despite being linked by intelligence sources to the Lockerbie bombing.

Is it ‘cos ‘a is Arab, Sir Gerald?

An interest analogy or logic perhaps is ;

It is similar to the way it is OK to use the word 'N%@@$%' as long as your skin colour is not white/pale (even though this is an offensive term irrespective). Imagine if Ernst was to say this vile word, especially if he was unfortunate enough to be an MP during the parliamentary debating process, he would be charged as a racist bigot and possibly suffer prosecution or suspension from HOC yet would it ever be acceptable for others (afro/caribbean etc)called this to use the term? Go figure?

What a vile, self loathing character Kaufmann really is but does he really care?

It has seemed to MrJ that for years Gerald Kaufman (from 2004 a Knight Bachelor) has distinguished himself for odiously silly remarks over quite a wide range of topics. Why should those connected with Jewishness be so privileged as to be singled out for special comment? And is he not entitled to self-loathing if that is what it is? Such conduct is better ignored or pitied. Maybe he wishes to make himself the Jew everyone loves to hate, but he is too risible for that.

Personally, I don't subscribe to this concept of 'offence crime'. If one person is offended by what another person has said, that shouldn't constitute a crime.

If Kaufman feels the urgent desire to denigrate Jews, even being Jewish himself, let him. If he refuses to employ someone on the same basis, or assaults them because of it, that is discrimination, and should be addressed.

But simply expressing a worthless, ill-informed, self-loathing opinion, no matter how bigoted or idiotic, should not be a crime.

Why should those connected with Jewishness be so privileged as to be singled out for special comment (Oh how the biased forgive their own!)? And is he not entitled to self-loathing if that is what it is (He is welcome to it as long as he remains silent and does not offend others with his vile remarks)? Such conduct is better ignored or pitied (Ernst hopes you are not a junior school teacher?). Maybe he wishes to make himself the Jew everyone loves to hate, but he is too risible for that (Deluded, bigoted MP's like Kaufman are like rhinoceroses: thick skinned, short-sighted, and always ready to charge at the chance sighting or mention of The Star of David).

When one writes the following:

one finds no credibility in the criticism, regardless of whether Sir Gerald's was a regrettable aside or a policy speech.

One is tempted to understand why he loathes himself.

Because God chose Israel?

To give offence is not illegal; Nor is it a legal entitlement to take offence. If Kaufman chooses to expose his true colours in the chamber that's a good thing - isn't it?

Surely, and at least in the cloistered confines of the debating chamber of Parliament, the essential democratic tenet of freedom of speech and expression and should be safe and have been put to rigorous employment.

Instead, an off the cuff comment from this odd little man (GK), seems to have motivated HG to ferment a spurious witch-hunt even though the accused has already apologised and discredited himself.

And yes, there should be consequences - but that should be at the ballot box at the hands of his constituents.

Anyway, being 'born Jewish' rather than of Jewish parents is an other matter entirely.

"Anonymous" feels no affliction beyond high taxes for poor governance, thank you! He is quite confident, however, that comparable anthropological observations on human sexuality in 1556 and 2011, would they exist, would render comparable findings that stiff members hath neither as much social or moral conscience as delivered wisdom would have us believe.

In the intervening centuries, Family Law became instutionalised and its enforcement became the purview of states rather than tribes. Of course, there were the robust Tudors, but the descent into darkness and denial took historical form with the pampered and powdered and continues today with the conflicted Americans. Media did and does its bit.

With the Pill came The Great Confusion. Then, as the Confused passed into Middle Age and acquired law degrees or Law TV, came the desire to redefine Gender. Add a dose of Consumerism and Disney, and the pixels divide and multiply.

Your Grace, we have thus changed far less than one might deem desired. Therefore, "give us grace to accept with serenity
the things that cannot be changed,
courage to change the things
which should be changed,
and the wisdom to distinguish
the one from the other." (Nieburh, of course)

More to the point, I think young and old and those in the middle need to declare nothing more than what is evident in the surgery: male or female. "Third Gender" is (and I think it "was") little more than a ploy of challenged women who suddenly felt desperate in a liberated and wired world. Critical thinking has long been undermined by conflicting biological and pleasure imperatives. Nothing new in this apart from the fact that laws are no longer made by men.

I think there might have to be some Parliamentary rule covering what he said to make it an offence that's actionable. I believe that calling another member a liar is one of the offences. And before the strange people pick that up it is an example of what is not allowed and nothing else.

In fact he has something of an unsavoury, sneaky and snide reputation. That he is a self-loathing Jew is hardly surprising, but he is the kind of individual that would in other times have been attracted to the Secret Police in whatever system he found himself. He is a misanthrope

HG says:-

Perhaps Kaufmann was referring to the allegation of a committed war crime by the Israeli Defence Force’s use of US supplied phosphorous ordinance for other purposes than creating a smoke screen to protect its own troops.
http://www.timesonline.co.uk/tol/news/world/middle_east/article5556027.ece

"In Gaza, the Israeli military didn't just use white phosphorus in open areas as a screen for its troops," - "It fired white phosphorus repeatedly over densely populated areas, even when its troops weren't in the area and safer smoke shells were available. As a result, civilians needlessly suffered and died."

http://www.hrw.org/en/news/2009/03/25/israel-white-phosphorus-use-evidence-war-crimes

It surely must be possible to be able to be critical of the Israeli State’s IDF conduct without being accused of inciting hatred or anti-Semetism. Even if this matter is regarded as a war crime, why then has no one been called to account; or for that matter, any one from Hamas, who encourage the indiscriminate bombing and rocketing of Israel while using Gazan Arabs as a human shield which is also a war crime ? –

Where are the coalition peace brokers, that are happy to get us involved in a Libyan crisis while seemingly abandoning all hope of a resolution the oldest of all the middle eastern conflicts of modern times ? – still sniffing around for the aroma of oil no doubt.

Let us not forget that those without any faith can and do parody those who have one , let alone those of us have theological differences upon each other.

I sometimes wonder if the left dont want all religions to be at each others throats just to prove socialism is correct.

Still I dont think we should be expecting any Jackie Mason tributes from Mr Kaufmann.

I often wonder how communism got mixed in with Judaism , perhaps they just never got over roman occupation. If I ever get to vist the Holy Land perhaps I will understand it better ,as when discussed in this country it never really relates to its home history.

This, Jews run the world lie, has to be finally nailed.

The important fact to remember is this.

This planet is run by something, and that something is no more Jewish, than it is virtually anything else.

"So what is that something?" I hope you are thinking to yourself.

The answer is both fairly simple, and highly complicated.

The simple answer is; Mystery Babylon The Great, The Mother of Harlots, and abominations of The Earth, sometimes better known as THE ESTABLISHMENT.

The complicated, as well as, dangerously tricky bit, is working out exactly what constitutes Mystery Babylon, or The Establishment.

My best guess is that to a very large extent, the exact same bother-hoods, and/or priest-hoods that ran the entire show 1-10 thousand years ago, are still running it today.

After all people, let us get real here. Do you really think that something as important as directing the future of human DNA, and this planet, would ever have been left in the hands of a group consisting of just one small religion, or even more stupidly, relative certifiable cretins, like Blair, Bush, Brown or Cameron?

Ah but leperchaun , standing up against a wrong is perhaps a bit more complex than you imagine .

QT was a little raw but got a few good points out into common language , indeed Eds little statesman interview was perhaps pre empting the slipping of his argument back into the pit of lies , Ms Abbot and Mr Sarwotka spun graciously for there own side of the argument totally missing how growth is affected by how much public sector expense is causing the deficet and ergo the correct conditions for growth. Oh well pity boris didnt use his line about london being formed by a group of itinerant italians only to be taken apart by an essex girl 20yrs later (it was as good as whiff whaff) .
TW opener had me in stitches , quite a brilliant rounding up by AN , and as usual asks the right sort of questions, well for me at any rate.
Mr muusa creates a few dilemmas , mainly if he (and the other 6 that have alledged to have gone) are legit , or not just part of another tactic. The lesser evil ? is perhaps the one that saves life at the expense of penalty. but as the author on NN showed there are families out there who this man knew/caused suffering to , for dissenting against gaddafi .
If it is defection they must in no way claim to be a saviour for a new governemnt or be allowed much of hand in any rebuilding , however i do have some smypathy for actions that end the struggle cleanly , that too is a hope for the new government in bhengazi as succesful nations have foundations and not endless revenge , but you do get the feeling that there are an awful lot of rats comming out of the woodwork of gaddafis regieme , some perhaps aware of the unpleasant debt due by there own people.
Paul masons news on NN was a little worrying , i mean how do experts get national debt restructuring wrong by tens of billions ?.

I am going off for a while , i have some duties to attend to and a little explantion to make.got to find out who owns the black dog that is with me and return it to its maker .

"When you've got water stuck in your ear, how do you get it out?"

BTW, it's unlikely it's "water" on the brain, and more likely cerebral fluid build up caused by mixing Gregorian chant/punk/jazz and folk music.

'Gaudete, gaudete Christos est natus
Ex Maria, Coz I want to see anarchy
Baby you got something Goin' on
Call me - Pennsylvania 6-5000
Altogether in the floral dance.'

Just a wild guess?

If you want to be released from this blog, I CLAIM MY THREE WISHES! Begorra.

mmm Mr delingpole has a troubling post , although cannot fault Nial fergusons current rising views .
I remeber seeing an aged Mr watson (of Watson and Crick fame )making a disturbing program on what society may be faced to answer as regards eugenics . In retrospect he may of course been warning us that in some hands it would be a challice of ultimate power.
the analysis that green thinking has links with national socilialist eugenics is difficult to match to cuurent idealogical greens positions , although i do agree it has some roots in it.
But where i disagree is that the green movement is anticapitalist and rooted in pessamism.

I consider my views as centre right (perhaps just right and conseravtive) and yet i am eco warrior . I have had my lovelock phase , bought into some of the hollywood tripe and manged to reason some of it for myself.

there is nothing more pessamism inducing than seeing at first hand certain ecological functions destroyed and never to return again for some time . These can be natural disasters or man made. It is not anticapitalist to point out some functions of capitalism are a financial abstract directly competing with nature , and to point out further that these are having a detrimental effect.

the sheer scale of the human populations ecnomic activities is not benign on its own natural enviroment. pessimissam is completely justified if one points out that the very corruptions that enabled companies to pour toxic loads into rivers , then silence someone for saying that it gets into the food eventually and we end up eating it and so become ill and weak as a species .

there is such as thing as the goldilocks paradox in both capitalist and green thinking , however i am sure he may agree which one is the better premptive position to take , once one understands how the sun sutains life through complex and interalted ecosytems that you can never reproduce in a manmade greenhouse.

suggest you read up a little biology before making assumptions that some capitalist ideas make us better off and we should disregard all the scare stories .

I appoligise your grace for using your site as an off topic billboard , and will be off for a while to seek god .

“Government’s plans to change the law on universal jurisdiction (which would sensibly prevent any Tom, Dick or Harry seeking an arrest warrant for any suspected war criminal)”

This is the real story – war criminals in Government protecting themselves just as Labour traitors protected themselves by watering down the treason laws as soon as they got into government.

Its wonderful in this time and age to have such a strident truth said out loud, with all the anti-semitic propaganda posted by the BBC, Channel 4, The guardian, The independent and a variety of other news organisations controlled by the extreme left.

I was appauled by the totally fictional "Promise" on channel 4. Everything was made up. It showed all Israelis living in big houses and Pals in slums (can be the opposite), showed british soldiers butchered whilst no one helped them and continued to drink their tea. Such a goebbels film and virtually no protests!
People wrote comments on the channle 4 blog like "great to understand the history of a region I know nothing about!" - this sends chills up my spine!
Its no wonder so many british people have a bad view of Israel. They are force fed it and see nothing else.

History shows that Jews haters receive their just deserts, but I am worried about how many people they hurt in the meantime.

Allow me to note that not all "Anonymous said" posts share the same IP address. If I choose to post here again, I will post under a unique pseudonym.

Two thoughts I'd like this Anonymous to be remembered for are--

1) The Privilege of free speech should not be limited to behind the close doors of Parliament; and

2) Let us end the lie that homosexuals are "afflicted".

It should prompt a laugh, except that I've heard and absorbed this rumour before:

HuffPo reports today that Gaddafi may indeed be Jewish. They add that the US NBC reported on this a few days ago and that many rebels believe they are fighting Gaddafi because he is a Jew.

Any comment from Sir Gerald?

Is Sir Gerald a friend of Peter Mandelson and Nat Rothschild?

If so, he has likely met Saïf.

Oy vey.

"I often wonder how communism got mixed in with Judaism."

Believe it or not Marx had a telelogical vision of history remarkably similar to that of Isaiah. However, instead of waiting for the arrival of the Messiah or the unfolding of Spirit in history, he inserted a materialistic dialectic.

Pity really because much of his critique of advanced capitalism is sound. Its his solution to the inherent problems that is so off the wall.

Karl Marx father was a Rabbi, thats how Judaism got mixed up with Comminism but the term Rabbi can be dealt with by reading Mathew 23 as can todays situation.
