Parish Notice

His Grace's is loath to dedicate a Monday morning post to domestic matters, but his august blog has been under attack now for some time, and it is not proving possible to keep on top of it. Indeed, His Grace is now forced to devote more time each day trying to stem the tide of offensive and irrelevant comment than he is able to dedicate to each morning's missive. When one is forced to spend the first hour of one's day not in the crucial contemplation of religio-political issues but in the cleansing of the temple, it is evident that something must change.

His Grace has attempted to make his blog a bastion of free speech, but there are those who are intent on hijacking every thread for their own malignant and malicious purposes. When he has directly emailed the perpetrators and politely asked them to desist, he receives insult, invective, and condemantion that he is not prepared to tell 'the truth'. Unlike the other big-beast blogs - religious or political - His Grace is a one-man outfit and quite unable to delegate or operate shifts. He does not have a Lord Ashcroft-type backer and neither does he have a Times or Telegraph backroom operation. He is now attracting in excess of 100,000 visitors each month from all over the world, and the sustained onslaught of negativity has become a burdensome.

His Grace has therefore decided to ban all 'anonymous' comments, thereby forcing all communicants to register a Google account (pseudonymous, if preferred) before they may contribute to a discussion thread. Should individual accounts thereafter prove irritating or offensive, it is easier to identify the individuals (who sometimes post under a plurality of ad hoc identities) and ban them. This Parish Notice will therefore be the last item to accept purely anonymous comments.

His Grace will hereafter monitor any progress and prays that it will ameliorate his happiness and general well being. Should there be no improvement, he will not hesitate to take more drastic action, however terminal: he is not averse to silence or cessation.

Sorry to hear this, Your Grace, though given the high degree of trollability of many internet denizens of either political persuasion, not surprising.

Your blog is always an interesting read, even if I don't necessarily agree with you.

Blogger John M Ward said...

This is an understandable response, and one that Iain Dale also felt compelled to take a couple of years ago.

You will never need to be silent or cease writing here; but you can always switch off comments entirely, either for all posts by default or post by post.

That would be a shame, should it happen, but vastly preferable to losing your contributions. God Himself would not wish the latter to occur, obviously, and we must be guided by His will.

I am sure this is the right decision, you might even go further and restrict the right to comment to those who sign up as members of the blog.

There is a lot of nonsense written about "free speech" on the internet, especially on blogs. The right to free speech does not imply the right to take over someone else's space for one's own purposes, or to hijack any debate at will.

The internet as a whole is a space in which freedom of speech needs to be preserved. Individual blogs are the single voices within that larger space, and belong to the individual speaker. If these people want to express their point of view, they should start their own blog.

Cranmer's blog is unique, appreciated by thousands and far too good to lose. The recent spate of devilment should be taken as a backhanded testimony to its worth and influence.

Pageantmaster is very sorry to read this and will probably not comment - he knows where he is not wanted.

However, this is indeed a problem which he has noted several successful blogs suffer from when they have received visits from internet flash mobsters - it can get very nasty indeed; in one case requiring the reporting of some of the threats to the police.

May he make two suggestions if YG's blog software permits:

1. moderating comments prior to publication would mean that in general there will be a raising of commenting standards, but at the expense of spontaneity and perhaps the openness of the site. Sadly without a team of administrators to police threads, this is the only feasible option, if YG no longer has any web-acolytes to assist.

2. permit anonymous [although under a nom-de-blog] posting without pre-moderation, but insist on the giving of a valid email address [not published] in order to post. That should enable miscreants to be identified and brought before the Star Chamber.

God bless YG.

"Trolls" come in many guises.

Some anonymous posts are clearly from established, experienced bloggers, including those giving themselves shifting identities. They sometimes offend by speaking soft words of encouragement. At other times they exaggerate or distort ideas in order to rile passion and dismiss or undermine legitimate debate.

If these changes root out these practices, then so be it. Speaking personally as one threatened with excommunication recently, I hope some allowance will be made for human error in the 'heat of battle' and that before any final sanction is imposed opportunities for reform will be allowed.

You are long suffering with some of us but the world would be dull and boring if we could not speak freely. Common manners being the gold standard to which we must aim.

The misuse of anonymity by the scum in order to harass the rest of us has become so prevalent that it is impossible to avoid this situation. It is sad, all the same.

We may be sure that the number of these criminals -- let's call them what they are -- is small. But they really DO intend to spoil it for everyone else, to achieve their own ends.

Your position is moderate and reasonable, your grace. And probably won't be enough to stem the flow of harassment.

Note that those who accuse you of "censorship" for this minimal and evidently necessary measure are almost certainly the people you need to ban. Any reasonable person would understand your position.

Indeed I recall when something controversial was posted on my own blog by a guest poster, in his own defence, the comments consisted of the incessant chanting of "Nazi! Nazi! Nazi!" (pronounced "Jew! Jew! Jew!"), by a handful of posters, until I moved to close comments. And when I did those who had engaged in the bullying, and used the comments purely to stifle real discussion, cynically accused me of censorship.

It is likely in the end that these criminals will create a situation where the only people allowed to post online will have been pre-verified; because otherwise the criminals rule. And how the establishment will love that level of control of who is, or is not, allowed to post!

I was not defending Griffin the human, I was defending the right of Black S. Africa to exist, (pre-riot Questions, 1 - 14).

Then again with Israel through the Begin article.

Both Mandala and Begin are ethno nationalists, as Griffin is.

Just because a computer gets a virus, you don't throw it out, likewise with good concepts such as Israel, South Africa, and England.... oh hang on.... I'm not sure about that last... we are here.

Cameron isn't the Conservative party, Griffin isn't the BNP, it's political policy concept thing, not a 'person thing'. As far as I'm concerned, the latter is a bit fan-based, too 'X-factorish' for me, and will lead to ruination

Griffin is odious, but Global Nationalism isn't.... Israel, Mandala statue in Westminster Square, etc.

.... why the statue praising the ethno nationalist... is have it both ways cake, really legit?

i have just seen somthing called reporters on bbc news 24(sort of weekly compilation video from around world) and it had a protestant minister in the nederlands , who says he doesnt believ in God from the pulpit , No heaven and wants a new rational approach to christianity , as it is far more earthly and nederalnds should become a lab for new ideas in the face of declining worship. they have tried to have him removed with no success !

One interview missed by MSM this weekend was on BBc news 24 when Frank Field Mp spoke about family , the interviewer gave hime some chance to explain and quite a wise and thoughtful piece he gave , our politicians have failed to look after family life .

Surely it is obvious that those spewing the negativity do not have the love of the lord jesus christ , and if they do not have that , how can they show themselves as true christians ,walking in the way of christ or competent in religio-political matters .

I go away with the clan for a teensy break to the savage wilds of Mont Tremblant (a chalet without wireless!!!) and chaos ensues?

So sorry to read of your undeserved troubles, Your Grace. Alas, fame and success tend to excite and enrage those who count their ability to scatter their puny turdlings over others' labours as a mark of accomplishment. One hesitates to imagine what their real life in the real world looks like.

AS some here, I too stress over how to set up accounts and such stuff...and I can make websites from scratch in HTML and Photoshop...and we would benefit greatly if one of your trusted communicants, YG, were to pen a comprehensible instructional on how to set up a Google watchamacallit. Yes, we all know that it's "easy," but a kind word, a different venue, a few bad jokes and a little friendly nudge from a familiar "face" would go a long way.

Can you hire somebody (you trust), to delete for you and send only the genuine emails?

No matter where, what line of business. One can try to make a difference but always those nutters, narcissistic, viscous types that nobody listens to trying to make one listen!

I wanted to know where Mr Griffin got this obvious quote from (he provided no reference):

'My son, peace be unto thy soul; thine adversity and thine afflictions shall be but a small moment; And then, if thou endure it well, God shall exalt thee on high; thou shalt triumph over all thy foes. Thy friends do stand by thee, and they shall hail thee again with warm hearts and friendly hands.'

It appears to be from a Mormon text.

One of my regularly visited blogs is to Ann Coulter every Wednesday: she permits no comments - for pretty obvious reasons. Better a one way homily from Your Grace than the loss of such a voice of sanity. I hope it will not come to that, but sometimes the best is the enemy of the good.

Thanks, Tony B....easier than I thought, but then, I already have a Google email account which somehow "recognized" me and nudged me along. I had a personal computer at home before anyone else I knew did...a Mac Plus with a 20 MB hard drive that was the talk of the town...and yet I turn into a blubbering primitive over stuff like this.

As Shadow (14:16) saidGlad that you have elected to carry on with the best blog in the blogosphere Your Grace. Some of us come here because Your Grace offers "daily bread" that is both brilliant and perspicacious. That is why I've signed up; although, like Mr. J above, I'm "averse to Google."

I pray the procedure will help to control some of the unpleasantness hereabouts, and that Your Grace may not lose several of his best Communicants through this.
