Palestine – no Jews, no gays, no gypsies...
It’s nothing to the Jews, of course. They’ve been there and done that numerous times – Seleucid Empire 167 BC; England 1290; Spain 1492; Goa 1552; Germany 1941 – to name but a few. Of course, other ethnic and religious groups have also suffered throughout history: Don Cossacks, Greeks, Armenians, Serbs, Roma, Hindus, Sikhs, Buddhists, Tibetans, Tutsis, Arabs, Muslims, Christians... The world has bent over backwards to prevent the repeat of such atrocities, and has occasionally directly intervened to preempt the return of such horrors.
Yet here we are, on the eve of the unilateral declaration of the State of Palestine, with a manifest disclosure of genocidal intent, and the world shrugs its collective shoulders. One might expect the TUC, dozens of Israel-loathing Labour MPs and sundry Liberals to fall over themselves in support of the quest for Palestinian statehood, but to see the names of two Conservative MPs is a cause of profound disquiet.
Do they not understand that a Palestinian declaration of statehood - based upon the 1967 'borders' and with the 'right of return' of several million Arabs - amounts to a declaration of war against Israel? How is it that Israel may be demonised simply for existing? How is it that she may be universally condemned for allegedly propagating the very evils which Palestine is seen to do with impunity?
In Israel, an Arab may be (and has been) President, while no Jew could ever be elected Mayor of Ramallah. Yet it is Israel which is the ‘apartheid state’. In Israel, there are 1.4 million Arab citizens with equal rights to Jews, yet there can be no Jews in Palestine. Yet it is Israel which is the ‘apartheid state’. In Israel, there is freedom of religion, while in Palestine synagogues are routinely vandalised and destroyed. Yet it is Israel which is the ‘apartheid state’. In Israel, homosexuality is tolerated and there is freedom of association, while Palestinian gays and lesbians frequently seek refuge in Israel because of persecution. Yet it is Israel which is the ‘apartheid state’.
Discrimination is a social ill that is manifest in Israel just as it is in every nation on earth. It is legitimate to criticise Israel for its failings, but the charge of ‘apartheid’ is a malicious libel designed to demonise the only democracy in the region. Those involved in our universities, which professes to prize knowledge and to pursue truth, are guilty of, at best, extreme ignorance or, at worst, collaboration in the effort to delegitimise the Jewish State and stir up anti-Semitic sentiment on a scale and ferocity not seen since the Nazi era.
And it appears it is to that era we are about to return.
Israel has warned of ‘harsh and grave consequences’ if the Palestinians persist with their plan to seek UN membership as a state. It remains to be seen how Her Majesty’s Government will vote on the motion. But should they decide to support the Hamas campaign of lies and hatred, His Grace’s blog, while remaining resolutely conservative, will cease to be Conservative. Such a decision would perhaps be neither ‘harsh’ nor ‘grave’, but would certainly be a natural and logical consequence.
