Double Dutch standards on Islam

From Mr Rodney Atkinson:

These are the kind of double standards practised by the fascist left both in Britain and Holland: Ignore the evils preached by Islamists but prosecute the non Muslims who reveal them.

Amsterdam Gets a Harsh Lesson in Islam 101 Posted by Bruce Bawer Jun 29th, 2012
In January 2009 a Dutch court ordered Geert Wilders to be prosecuted for offending Muslims and inciting anti-Muslim hatred.

The complaint was based not on slurs, as such, but on factual statements made by Wilders, in his film Fitna and in various public venues, about Islamic beliefs and about actions inspired by those beliefs.

In June 2011, after a prolonged legal ordeal that cost Wilders greatly in time, money, and emotion, and that represented a disgrace to the tradition of Dutch liberty, he was finally acquitted.

In February of this year, the Islamic Students Association at the Vrije Universiteit (VU) in Amsterdam invited Haitham al-Haddad, a British sharia scholar, to participate in a symposium, but when some of al-Haddad’s sophisticated theological statements about Jews (the usual “pigs and dogs” business) and about other topics came to light, members of the Dutch Parliament spoke out against the invitation, a media storm erupted, and VU canceled its plans.

Whereupon a venue in Amsterdam called De Balie, which sponsors debates, talks, plays, and sundry cultural and artistic events (and whose café is a good spot to grab a late-morning coffee), stepped in and offered al-Haddad their stage.

At the event that ensued, al-Haddad spelled out, and defended, many aspects of Islamic law, including the death penalty for apostates. Because of this specific statement about executing apostates, al-Haddad was reported to Dutch officials for having broken the same laws that Wilders had been put on trial for violating.

The other day, however, judicial authorities announced their determination that al-Haddad had not committed any offense and would therefore not be prosecuted for his remarks. Why? Supposedly because he had placed conditions on the death penalty for apostates.

I was curious to know exactly what he had said, so I searched for the debate on You Tube. Lucky me, there it was, all 76 minutes of it. I will recount it in some detail here because I think it provides a window on one or two bemusing aspects of the European mentality in our time.

As the event began, Yoeri Albrecht, director of De Balie and the evening’s host, explained that he’d decided to invite al-Haddad because it’s “important to discuss the position of Islam in the West.” He told the cleric that he was “very happy that you agreed” to come and wished him “a warm welcome.”

Albrecht had invited two other men to join him and al-Haddad onstage. One was Kustaw Bessems, a journalist associated with the Labor Party; the other was Tofik Dibi, a young Dutch-Moroccan Marxist, university student, and member of Parliament for the Green Left Party who has publicly protested against Wilders and who represents himself as an advocate for a modern, progressive Islam. Two members, in short, of leftist establishment parties; neither Wilders nor anyone else from his Freedom Party was asked to join the debate.

Bessums noted early on that while he finds al-Haddad’s views “despicable,” it was he who had personally taken the initiative to find an alternate venue after VU’s cancellation, because he believes in free speech (as if free speech means that fanatics have an automatic right to a platform).

Dibi’s questions for al-Haddad were a tad challenging, but his manner was respectful, even deferential. The imam, for his part, didn’t beat around the bush.

Dibi: “Do you have more right to speak about Islam than other Muslims?”
Al-Haddad: “Yeah, of course.”

Dibi: “Do you allow yourself to doubt?”

Al-Haddad: “There are certain things in Islam that are clear. No one can doubt them.”

Albrecht, for his part, sounded almost astonished when, having finally grasped al-Haddad’s key point, he said: “Outside of Islam, there is no truth?”

Al-Haddad: “No.”

Albrecht: “Could you understand that a lot of people would be afraid of this kind of thinking?”

Al-Haddad: “There is something called truth. There is right and wrong.”

When al-Haddad admitted that he supported stoning for crimes like adultery and apostasy, Albrecht exclaimed: “You can’t be serious!”

The host seemed to be genuinely gobsmacked. (Incidentally, the “conditions” al-Haddad had reportedly placed on the death penalty for apostates, and that had purportedly saved him from prosecution by the Dutch judiciary, were as follows: an apostate could not be executed until his case was handled in a Muslim country by a sharia judge.)

It emerged that earlier that day al-Haddad had refused to let a woman sit beside him on a TV show.

Asked now about women’s rights, al-Haddad insisted that men and women, being different, have different rights; that obliging women to wear headscarves is not an act of oppression any more than parking rules in Britain are; and that “women’s rights” need to be viewed in context.

A woman in the audience was given an opportunity to express her own shock at al-Haddad’s views on women: “I am really amazed at the way you think!” For a while, Albrecht gave up his seat onstage to her. “Who gives you the right,” she asked al-Haddad, “where do you get the right, to discuss women’s rights?”

I was shocked too. I was shocked that in the year 2012, these Dutch infidels – intellectual infidels – professed to be shocked, and indeed gave every indication of being sincerely shocked, when they heard a recognized Islamic authority spell out basic facts of Islamic belief.

These are the same basic facts that Geert Wilders has been talking about for years. It was for daring to speak these facts – for, in effect, reporting on the same barbaric beliefs and practices that al-Haddad was now not only describing but defending – that Wilders had been hauled into court on charges of having insulted al-Haddad’s faith.

Pim Fortuyn, Theo van Gogh, Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Wilders – all of them had been reviled around the world as Islamophobes for stating these same facts. But on that evening at De Balie it was almost as if none of these critics of Islam had ever opened their mouths.

By the end of the evening, al-Haddad had made it absolutely clear that he supported the gradual implementation of sharia law in the West – starting with relatively innocuous-seeming stuff like divorce tribunals and Islamic finance, then moving bit by bit into ever more serious territory.

One particularly depressing development was that after an hour or so of listening to al-Haddad, Dibi admitted that he had caught himself feeling that al-Haddad, being a scholar, must be right about Islam after all.

I’ve often felt that a major reason why less observant, essentially secularized Muslims like Dibi are so hesitant to speak out against the likes of al-Haddad (aside from sheer terror) is that some small voice deep inside whispers to them that he’s the real thing – the good Muslim, a man whose pious certitude, and unwavering devotion to the Prophet shame their own co-optation by infidel decadence.

It was at around this point that Geert Wilders and the Freedom Party entered the discussion – indirectly, to be sure.

“Some people in Parliament,” said Dibi, “I don’t want to name the party again, think that men like yourself are slowly colonizing the West – they’re pretending to be nice, pretending to be intellectuals, but secretly they are trying to take over.”

Al-Haddad asked Dibi if he had allowed himself to be brainwashed by such silliness.

“No,” Dibi was quick to insist, “I don’t believe that” – even though he had just spent over an hour listening to al-Haddad confirm these very warnings.
Dibi’s next question suggested that he was, indeed, after the evening’s workout, a torn, confused, and, yes, cowed young man: “Are you slowly, step by step, trying to implement sharia as a scholar?”

“Yes,” the scholar replied, “if the people request it.”

Certainly the audience at De Balie that evening was packed with sharia fans. They cheered al-Haddad’s attacks on the West; they applauded his praise of Islamic law. Every outburst of boisterous support for the imam’s ugly sentiments only reaffirmed things that Geert Wilders has been saying for years.

But nobody at De Balie that evening – including Bessons, who from beginning to end made clear his utter hostility to al-Haddad’s views – even wanted to mention Wilders’s name.

Excellent. The "Do you ever doubt?" bit @ 27mins is brilliant comedy. As is the bit about stoning. Somebody should arrange for Al-Haddad to have a lot of air-time on UK TV. It would do our country a power of good.

What a silly person!
If that's what passes for a scholar in Islam then God help the stupid.
My nine year-old son can argue better than that.
"My aunty lives in Israel" so I can't have said that all Jews are pigs and dogs and should be exterminated.
It is quite right that "after due process" (ie sharia courts of which he is a judge) apostates, Muslim insulters and adulterers etc. should be stoned to death.

Deport him? No! He's nearly as useful as Gordon Brown was to the Tories at the last election. We should have the humourless bugger on Have I Got News For You, Newsnight, and Thought For The Day every week until the penny drops.

Nasty Weirdo!

I blame secular western liberals for bringing us to this by turning their backs on Christianity and opening up the void that such rubbish rushes to fill. At some point we will have to decide whether we are engulfed by such hateful drivel or we fight in the light of Christian truth.
But just at the moment I can't see much of a chance of that - unless of coirse, we get him on the telly.

At the risk of being hounded off His Grace’s blog, I have to say that up to a point I can see the logic in what this bloke says. When he started talking about stoning, though, I had to stop.

It is hard for Westerners to understand and appreciate such a different kind of society, but really, is our own so great? We have marriage in freefall, staggering rates of crime, divorce, abortion, STIs, porn, alcohol and drug addiction, etc. Is this really liberating?

If people hadn’t kept interrupting him I think he would have expanded on his views on women – I don’t think he felt women were inferior; they are just different and have different roles in his society. I tend to agree to a point (which is one reason I am opposed to women priests, but that is going off-topic). Being a woman is great. I like it. I don’t want to be like a man. I like men to be like men, not like women. I would certainly have liked to hear more from him on this topic, as I do think (with the benefit of hindsight) that the women’s lib movement has been responsible in part for the unhappy situation in which we find ourselves today as women abandon children to the care of strangers to become wage slaves.

As to people being prepared to die horribly for their beliefs, well, we have many Christian martyrs who have done just that.

I try to imagine what it must be like to come from a strict Muslim culture into our loose-morals anything-goes culture – no wonder they want to impose Shariah. (Yes, they could go back home if they don’t like it, but again that is a different topic.)

Listening to this bloke just proved to me why Christianity is so right and Islam is so wrong. A lot of the core beliefs so far as moral standards go are just the same, but Christianity allows freedom of will and Islam enforces. It is only since Christianity has declined in this country, and love of God has morphed into love of self, that our culture has become so awful.

Flossie. You make an excellent point. We need to clean up our own act and if Islam is of any use to us at all, it is to show the West where it went wrong.

We could make a start by broadcasting East Enders and ALL gratuitously violent films after 9pm, and by executing drug barons who bring their social poisons into the country...

Mere initial steps in a long journey...

I too agree with many of the points you make.

What is clear is that Islam, properly followed as a religion of submission, is incompatible with Western Christian society. It just cannot be practiced in countries based on democracy, the rule of law and Christian ethics.

If Muslims want to live by their book let them, but in their own nation or caliphate. If, within their own nation, they wish to stone people to death for transgressing their religious dictates and believe this is the will of Allah, who can stop them and on what basis?

The uncomfortable bit for Judeo Christianity is that many of these views about to how to respond to transgressions of the law and the role of women, are actually based on the Old Testament. Islam , unlike Christianity today, still sees itself as a militant religion that has to fight the modern world and physically exterminate those opposed to its beliefs or who within it transgress its laws. It is harsh and uncompromising and based on fear and supression. Some would argue there was a time when both Judaism and Christianity was too.

If he said these things in this country, there would be a lot of debate. If I went on air and talked about these things from a warning point of view, I would probably get arrested for a hate crime. The playing field is not level.

But what he does do is throw into sharp relief what out church leaders have not done. Spoken up publicly for our faith, and what we believe without fear. We have left a vacuum - and something will always fill the space left.

While we are beginning to see senior clerics standing up to be counted, as we reach lines that should not be crossed in all sorts of areas, the momentum of change is now in full flood. The only way to stop it is not to erect a few sandbags, but to get on our knees. When France was in the grip of the French Revolution, we had Wesley et al traveling the length and breadth of the land, preaching Christ. We had a spiritual revolution instead of one by force of arms. We need the same thing now. The reality of Christ is more than words, and the power of the Spirit more than ideals.

The essential point is why is Dutch Law treating those of a different ethnic or religious background or persuasion differently?

Why also is this sort of discrimination taking place all over Europe in particular and the western world in general including supposedly separate independent nations like Australia, New Zealand, Canada and The USA, all at approximately the same time?

Is a conspiracy not self-apparent, indeed as obvious as the nose on your face?

So who is behind this self-apparent control of the thoughts and actions of the judicially, and political classes of again supposedly democratic, independent and well dispersed westernized nations?

For something or some body most certainly is pulling the strings, as well as controlling minds.

Working this out is remarkably easy to do.

Ask yourself these types of questions.

Who or what has sufficient access to hard cash?

Who or what has sufficient influence in all of these, and many other nations, including of course the EU, UN, and NATO?

Who or what has sufficient motivation to control the destiny of mankind?

Who or what has sufficient need to control the destiny of mankind?

Who or what has a long history of this kind of divisive subversion going back at least 1600 years?

Who or what has sufficient power to keep their own role in this kind of subversive activity almost entirely secret from the scrutiny of the western, as well as the Islamic public?

Ultimately there is only ONE power in this material world that comes anywhere near to possessing all or even a majority of the above.

Therefore as I have had to virtually spell it out to you, there is no prizes for guessing the correct answer. Although please give yourself a Gold Star, if you finally get there in the end.

When a crime has been committed, there is little point in discussing the relative moral or otherwise worth of the victim, the mode of operation of the particular criminal, or even the intended or otherwise consequences of the crime.

What one eventually needs to know, is who the criminals are working for, so that they can be stopped from masterminding similar or much worse criminal conspiracies in the future.

Those who think Western society is so depraved, should spend some time living in Muslim countries and observe how outward conformity to a religious code does not deliver societies free of addictions, STIs, pornography, abortion et al. They are just kept underground and out of sight so as not to incur the attention of religious authorities and their barbaric sanctions.

The prohibition on the consumption of alcohol is but one example of Islamic hypocrisy, as is the practice of homosexuality among both sexes, exacerbated by the most unnatural segregation that occurs under some of the strict regimes.

The human propensity to sin remains constant and if Christianity teaches the world anything, it's that moral change cannot be enforced from the outside but results only from a continual interior conversion by the Spirit of God.

I also think Jews and Christians need to reflect on the evolution of their religious traditions. Neither Judaism nor proto-Christianity were spread through armed conflict. The Hebrew people were engaged in centuries-long struggle for ethical monotheism against the onslaught of polytheistic paganism, while the early church was the victim of both religious and secular persecution for the first 300 years of its existence.

Islam, on the other hand, was spread by armed conflict and connivance with violence in the name of Mahomet's deity continues to this day. Some go so far as to view Islam as a fabricated faith, constructed to impose a politico-religious unity on the newly conquered peoples of the Islamic empire, comprising both Jews and Christians.

There is a certain Pelagian tendency in many western countries that is attracted by the harshness of Islamic proscriptions. The 'string 'em up' attitude in Britain also has a sneaking admiration for their so-called moral rectitude. As if they can bargain with God by behaving in ways they think He will approve of and so achieve salvation, when in their hearts they are just sinners like the rest of us.

Oh, and their failure to recognise paradox.

A very lucid and good response Hooker. It is all very well ruminating on other faiths from the comfort of an armchair in the West, dismissing barbaric punishments in a cavalier way.

Quite a different scenario when you live in that culture, make friends and realise that moderate Islamists are very nice people. Not all Islamic people are extremists.

In the third world, freedom of speech is curtailed and one must be careful of the opinions one expresses publically and to a certain extent in private.

Authentic Christians should feel for people who are gagged and live in fear. They are poor and suffer from mental ill health living under the yolk. An authentic Christian is supposed to alleviate suffering even if it is only in a small way, if they are able to.We are obscenely affluent and they have nothing.

Is our society so great ? no..but it is a hell of a lot better than theirs in most ways.

For some reason Hindus and Moslems are very au fait with Christian belief. They quizz me on why self professed Christians do not follow the Christian ethical code of conduct with particular reference to generosity, kindness and the caring of others. They are not referring to the missionaries who do a wonderful job but Christian

Can theists with fundamentally opposing beliefs actually live together in one cohesive society without compromising on core doctrines? And can they live alongside those with no faith who promote atheist and secular values?

In Western liberal-democratic systems we rightly value freedom of religion and freedom of speech.
The State balances 'human rights'. Surely the ultimate outcome can only be the marginalisation of all faiths apart from no faith? We are already witnessing this.

Make no mistake the justified critique of Islam is being used by anti-theists as an indirect attack on all who have faith in a God who prescribes certain moral standards. Bloggers on here are demonstrating this.

Let's be honest, Judaism had very similar 'laws' to Islam. One only has to read the Torah to see this. So too Christianity had a 'militant' period (not just by Catholics) when it oppressed and killed in the name of God.

What's the answer? God knows and He has revealed it to us.

You claim that Christianity had a militant period which was not connected to the Roman Catholic Church. I am not saying that you are wrong, but am simply asking for an example.

I am not aware of Gods answer to this problem, perhaps you may care to enlighten me.

And finally

We have had Jews living in this country for thousands of years, and am not aware of any problems caused by ordinary Jews to the rest of British society. Therefore if you are aware of any please give examples so that I can again be enlightened.

With a very few notable but very minor exceptions Jews, Muslims, and Hindus have lived in this country in peace and harmony with the rest of the secular and Christian society for a very long time.

Therefore we already know how to deal with this 'problem'. We do virtually nothing and leave people alone as much as is possible

I refuse to believe for one moment that even the tiny minority of committed Atheists that reside in this nation give a toss whether little Isaac or Moshe has a bit of superfluous skin removed from his willy or not.

We should ask ourselves why our slave owning masters, and their very own utterly corrupted political class most obviously do.

Personally I am rather pleased not to have lost mine, as one becomes rather attached to certain things after 52 years. However MC is not in anyway to be compared to FC, for there is no reasonable connection between the two.

Now if they had cut my whole penis off shortly after birth, I would most likely have wanted to kill them both.

Do you see a difference?

Our Marxist owners are simply causing trouble for troubles sake.

They cause the problem, then wait for the reaction, and then offer the solution they wanted to force upon us in the first place.

Our masters have been doing this kind of thing since time immemorial and they have no intention of quitting on a winning formula.

The ultimate jewel in the crown of Islam has always been Europe. Over the past nearly 1,400 years our Christian ancestors in Spain, south to Sicily, northeast to the Balkans and east to the Ukraine and many places in between always managed to heroically fight and save Christian Europe from the armies of Jihad. During the last 40 years Islam has waged a stealth Jihad to invade Europe through massive immigration and they are winning. Their demographics victory can been seen on the streets of every large city in Western Europe. Soon Muslims will be majorities in many European cities from London to Berlin and even Moscow. These Islam foot soldiers (immigrants) flock to post Christian Europe where they are given the red carpet treatment. They are welcomed by the multi-culturalists, given special minority status and perks, and grab up all sorts of free benefits given to them gladly by the "infidels" who run Europe's welfare states. We are doomed by our tolerance. Tolerance becomes a crime when applied to evil.

Five years old Benny comes home from Hebrew school one day and says to his parents, "I learned something interesting at school today."

"That’s nice, Benny," says his father, "What did you learn today?"

Benny thinks for a moment, then replies, "Daddy, have all the men in our family had their willies criticised?"

His mother laughs out loud. "Oh Benny, darling, the word is circumcised, not criticised, but either way the answer is still ‘YES’."

Dodo said - "Q: Why are Jewish men circumcised? A: Because Jewish women won't touch anything unless there's 20% off!

A medical school instructor once asked a student what he planned to specialize in. The student replied, "I want to specialise in circumcision." When asked why, he replied, "They get £150,000 a year, plus tips."

Atlas once discovered a small growth under his foreskin. Worried he went to the doctor. He laughed. "You idiot, that's your penis!" "

And then Dodo said - "Racist! Do explain."

And all I could do is sigh at Dodo's apparent ignorance of his own posts.

Cutting edge humour, dear boy.

The first joke; maybe if you're very sensitive. In my experience, Jews are comfortable with laughing with others about themselves - just like the Irish and Scottish.

The latter two make no reference to race whatsoever.

Get over yourself!

And if you want to make serious comments about the post, do so.

And the joke you found 'racist' came from a Jewish website:

"Mazeltov, you have arrived at the best website available today for funny Jewish jokes and funny Jewish humour.

On this website you'll find Jewish laughs galore.

(1) You will find here: Over 2,590 of the funniest Jewish jokes (with the naughtier ones kept separate); Joke Categories to help you find that joke for a special occasion; The world’s first Kosher Lateral Thinking Puzzles; Speeches (e.g. for best man / special birthday); The world's first Jewish Dating Tests; Jewish jokes for Children; Research into Laughter; Cartoons; Jewish poems; A detailed Glossary of Yiddish and Hebrew Terms; Extracts from the famous book, 'Enquire Within Upon Everything'; and even some non-Jewish jokes. And the website is regularly updated.

(2) One of the books based on this website, "Oy! The Ultimate Book of Jewish Jokes", was one of only five humor books nominated for a Quill Book Award 2007."

Some people!

"As to people being prepared to die horribly for their beliefs, well, we have many Christian martyrs who have done just that." - Flossie

The word martyr has a different meaning in Islam to the one it has in Christianity. A Christian martyr usually dies because of their faith or because they refuse to renounce it. There are several ways a Muslim can become a martyr e.g. dying in childbirth, dying on Friday or dying of a stomach complaint (don't ask)but its usual meaning is for someone who dies killing or being killed in the name of Allah i.e. while on jihad. As for renouncing Islam - under pressure a Muslim is allowed to do that, while retaining his religion in his heart (known as taqiyya, this habit has become extended to the principle that you can tell an infidel anything you damn well like as long as it furthers the cause of Islam).

Nice try, Dodo, but that was merely the tip of the iceberg that you and the Inspector have been you have been concocting with your foul posts in recent months. And clearly, with Godwin's 2nd Law having clearly been proved, I leave this comments thread to go downward into the mire of Irish Roman Catholics slapping each other on the back for how good they are at poking fun at other races and sexuality, as is their want. Fingers crossed they might go on holiday (or better yet, fail to pay their internet provider and get cut off!) so that further comments sections might have a chance of some reasoned and representatively Christian comments!

Right. Where has that Youthpasta got to...

Has it occurred to you that Christianity is on the wane in this country thanks to people like you ? For example you stance on female genital mutilation. What was it you said, something about working with the natives while respecting their customs. You pathetic individual. Why can’t you show some passion in your belief ?

No doubt you will register smug self satisfaction on seeing this tribute to you. For God’s sake man, declare to all you are a Christian, and that you will die one, and that you just don’t care whatever anybody else thinks. And if you can swear to this, then, behold, we’ve made a Roman Catholic of you...

Yes! we need to see more of this man. Maybe then the public will see where this is headed.

I am pleased to see that the Dutch have an MP who is as dopey as our own Chloe Smith. Never thought that would be possible.

Did you REALLY expect anything better from religion, any religion?
I suggest you re-read some of the statements in the "bible" about consorting with "unbelievers" and how they should be treated.
Ths particular variant of islam merely shows that they are 622 years behind.

Did no-one challenge this brainwashed idiot (al-Haddad) with the proposition - excuse me, but what is this "god" thing (allah) of which you speak?
Show some evidence, please?

I'm still chuckling over the jokes you posted. Jewish humour has to be the best. I must say that those who would object to such comedy have to be too sensitive for this world.
It is probably the wrong thread in which to stoutly defend Oliver Cromwell. Let it be known though, that there are those on this forum who vehemently disagree with you and The Inspector.
Another thread, another time.

Isn't it funny to see how "horrified" Liberals are when confronted by Islam when otherwise they conspire to have anyone, like Gert Wilders, who states the same facts jailed for Islamophobia.

Perhaps it comes from living life with your head stuck up your own arse rather than opening your eyes to see what is plain to anyone else.

Why thank you - about the jokes. I too love Jewish humour.

As for dear old Oliver, well he's been dead a long time and judging his contribution to the furtherance of Christianity and religious and democratic liberty is, as you say, for another time.

Hi Mr Cad and Mr Dodo,

Whilst I agree it is for another thread, there is some irony here for Mr Dodo. Didn't Oliver Cromwell allow Jews to come back and live in the Commonwealth in 1656 and as Dodo's dad was Jewish, if it wasn't for old Ollie- 'that bastard' as inspector called him, then we might not have our Dodo clucking around on this blog! (and we would of course be all worse off without him).

Dash it ... missed the joke! Repost it and throw caution to the wind.

As for my father, his family fled from Spain at the turn of the last century so he had no need of Oliver's Army. Now my Irish mother's side is a different story.

Interesting story OC's life too.

Hi Dodo,

I'm afraid the moments past and the joke would fall quicker than a branson ballon.

I can see where that passion and argumentative nature comes from- Sephardi Jewish roots with Catholic Irish thrown in. Wow- what a formidable combination!

Excellent points, Your Grace, especially about the silliness of the Dutchies being so astounded at the god sharia scholar's candor.

In my last comment, over at the circumcision brawl post, I invited all my fellow European Yids to get out of Europe. Allow me to take this opportunity to extend this advice to my fine-feathered conservative (and Conservative) Christian friends here and to remind them to look at population statistics and projection on Europe and apply some primary-grades arithmetics with dollar-store pocket calculator. Aaaah-hah!

Canada and ...I'm sure Carl will agree... the US beacon, Your Grace, even to you. On the way to my synagogue I pass a lovely Anglican church with a walled garden, built sometime in the early 1900s in a charmingly warm Gothic Revival style in grey dressed limestone, with a slate roof, elegant copings and buttresses and airy tracery. Pefect place for you to keep an eye on your e-flock, Your Grace, dare I suggest. Alas, I do think they may be tea-totallers there, though, but if you were to make your way over to my house of worship a few blocks away after our services, at just before noon on Saturdays, you could join me and my cronies for a few drops of fiery Sco'ish single malt and a bite of salty shmaltz herring. You certainly wouldn't be the first friendly cleric to be invited in...and to stumble out into the bright day with bits of onion and a splatter of herring juice on his collar on the way to someone's house or mansion for more substantial Sabbath victuals.
